As first promised last year, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has finally reached a new standardised wayleaves (land or property access) agreement, which aims to make the process of deploying new rooftop base stations (cell sites) for UK mobile network operators both easier and faster so as to improve 4G and 5G coverage.

Over the past few months all of the three major UK mobile network operators – EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 – have joined Three UK in offering 4G or 5G pay monthly mobile data (mobile broadband) plans with “unlimited” allowances. We take a quick look at what you can get (SIM-Only) for your money and some of the caveats.

Mobile operator O2 UK and Samsung have announced that their latest trial of ultrafast mobile broadband connectivity will involve equipping a standard ambulance with simulated 5G connectivity, which they say could transform such emergency vehicles into a unique remote consultation room.

After Three UK led the way, followed by Vodafone, then EE and today mobile operator O2 has become the last of the major UK providers to launch its own “Unlimited Data” (mobile broadband) tariffs for 4G and future 5G customers, which are available on both their Custom Plans and SIM-only contracts from £33 a month.

Crowdsourced data analysis firm Tutela has today published their annual 2019 State of Mobile Networks report for the United Kingdom, which among other things found that you’ll get the fastest 3G and 4G mobile broadband download speeds in Scotland (median average of 14.6Mbps). A new UK Government funded project called NoServiceHere is hoping, among other things, to harness the power of the Twitter community in order to help identify areas (rural and urban) of poor mobile signal by curating geospatial data, which can then be used to help focus the rollout of 3G, 4G and future 5G networks.

A new survey of 2,000 mobile phone using UK adults, which was conducted by Global Wireless Solutions and OnePoll, has claimed that 11% of respondents felt their experience in a restaurant had “been ruined due to poor mobile connectivity.” Meanwhile EE and O2 offered the most reliable service while inside such eateries.

Mobile operator giffgaff has once again (they seem to do it each year) refreshed their range of 4G mobile “goodybag” plans by effectively doubling the data (mobile broadband) allowances on three of their mid-range tariffs, which for example means that for £15 per month you’ll now get 15GB instead of 8GB.

RootMetrics will today publish their latest H1 2019 study of 4G mobile network performance in the United Kingdom, which once again concluded that EE (BT) is overall still the top performing operator and also delivered the fastest aggregate mobile broadband download speed in UK-wide testing (37.6Mbps). Sadly O2 remains at the bottom.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has criticised Ofcom’s recent proposal to defragment the 5G ultrafast mobile broadband friendly 3.4-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands after next year’s auction, which they complain favours Three UK (H3G) by allowing them to establish a “kingmaker” position from where they can obstruct rivals.

A new Which? study has found that in 524 out of 650 UK parliamentary constituencies 4G mobile coverage is not available via all four operators to the whole constituency. The most poorly-served city-based constituencies (all under 80% coverage) were Rochford, Southend, South West Devon, Romsey and Southampton North.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has this morning announced that they will launch their own 5G based Sky Mobile plans during November 2019, which as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) partner of O2 will of course be directly linked to their UK rollout plan (here) for the new ultrafast mobile network.
