Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has confirmed earlier reports that it intends to return to the fixed line broadband market. The move could result in the provider either moving to build their own “full fibre” (FTTP) style network or partnering with another ISP (e.g. Virgin Media, Cityfibre).

Sky (Sky Broadband) has this morning announced that they will launch their own 5G based Sky Mobile plans during November 2019, which as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) partner of O2 will of course be directly linked to their UK rollout plan (here) for the new ultrafast mobile network.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has today confirmed that their next generation ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network will join EE, Vodafone and Three UK by beginning its commercial rollout in October 2019. The aim being to go live in 20 towns and cities this year and a total of 50 by Summer 2020.

Mobile operators O2 and Vodafone have today finalised a deal that will extend their existing joint 50:50 network sharing agreement to include 5G mobile active equipment, such as radio antennas, on shared network sites across the UK. But earlier proposals to deliver a “shared, future proof fibre” network have not materialised.

A new report from Ofcom has revealed that Plusnet attracted the most UK consumer complaints for fixed line broadband and phone in Q1 2019, while Vodafone attracted the most gripes for Mobile and TalkTalk for Pay TV services. On the flip side Sky Broadband (Sky TV) and EE generated the fewest fixed line moans.

The UK communications and media (broadband, mobile, TV etc.) regulator has today set out a range of new measures that are intended to tackle bundles of both mobile handsets and tariffs (airtime contracts) together, which often continue to charge consumers for the handset even once the minimum contract term has ended.

Mobile operator O2 has invested £32 million to upgrade their existing 4G network capacity at just under 400 UK tourist hotspots for the summer holidays. Some of the locations to benefit from this include the Abbey Road crossing, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace and the Angel of the North.

The telecoms regulator has opened an investigation into mobile operator O2 and its compliance with their billing rules (General Condition 3.2), which requires providers to ensure that their charges are accurate and represent the services received by the customer. Apparently they’ve suffered an “Extraordinary Performance Failure.”

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today braced the industry for the introduction of their new “Text-to-Switch” (Auto-Switching) system for UK mobile operators like Vodafone, O2, Three UK and EE, which is going live on Monday next week. The new system will make it easier and quicker for consumers to change networks.

The chair of the cross-party British Infrastructure Group (BIG), Grant Shapps MP, has called on the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to investigate claims of “potential collusion between some major operators,” which it’s alleged may have contributed to the sudden collapse of mobile retailer Phones 4U in 2014.

The annual Connected Britain Awards 2019 (Total Telecom) were handed out last might to a number of winners in London, which among other things saw several UK broadband ISPs and “full fibre” network projects (Openreach, BT, KCOM, Superfast Essex etc.) pick up awards for their various different efforts.

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA), Countryside Alliance, National Farmers Union (NFU), Rural Services Network and Which? have today jointly called on the UK Government to ensure that the proposed plan by mobile broadband operators to improve rural 4G network coverage meets “four key tests.”

Crowdsourced data analysis company Tutela has revealed the results from their latest study of mobile broadband performance (i.e. speeds, latency, jitter and packet loss) across the United Kingdom. Overall EE (BT) remains top of the pack for 4G networks, while Three UK does the best for older 3G services.

The UK High Court of Justice has ruled that Ofcom must pay back £220m to mobile operators as part of restitution for the regulator’s handling of a licence fee hike to the 900MHz and 1800MHz (3G and 4G) spectrum bands (i.e. £82.4m to EE, £54.4m for Vodafone, £54.4m for O2 and £26.9m for Three UK).

Mobile operators EE (BT), Vodafone, O2 and Three UK have confirmed a new agreement that could help to boost the rural coverage of their 2G, 3G, 4G and future 5G networks. Under the deal a new infrastructure company will be established to help build masts in remote areas. Now they just need Ofcom to agree.

The trade association for mobile operators, Mobile UK, has warned that many councils currently adopt an “inconsistent” approach to improving mobile connectivity and fixed line broadband is often given a higher priority. Instead the group wants local authorities to take the future roll-out of ultrafast 5G networks more seriously.
