Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with broadband ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), has today announced that they expect to cover 13,000 premises across the Kent (England) city of Canterbury via their new wholesale accessible 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.
The Canterbury deployment represents an interesting development, not least because Virgin Media hasn’t previously had any significant presence in the city. At present, the main gigabit-capable operators in the city are Openreach and Netomnia (YouFibre), along with some smaller roll-outs from OFNL and others.
Nexfibre has already covered over 1 million premises across the UK with their new full fibre network, and they’re currently in the process of investing another £1bn during 2024, which should enable them to cover an additional 1 million UK premises (on top of their existing footprint).

Just for some context. Telefónica, Liberty Global and InfraVia Capital Partners originally setup the new £4.5bn nexfibre joint venture in 2022 (here), which aims to deploy an open access fibre network to reach “up to” 7 million UK homes (starting with 5m by 2026) in areas NOT currently served by Virgin Media’s network of 16m+ premises. The funding reflects £3.3bn of fully underwritten financing and up to £1.4bn in equity commitments.
Nexfibre is looking around Batheaston,Bathampton & other parts of Bath this week & next week,so we might yet more fibre laid.
hello everyone
some part’s of Sandwich Kent are also getting NexFibe as a lot of work is being done right now.
i see the they are using telegraph poles that are already used by Openreach for they full fibre in Sandwich. can i ask is this how the build they network.
Openreach have to provide access to their infrastructure under PIA – Physical Infrastructure Access.
Nothing to stop another CP from requesting access and having permission to build, but you can’t just willy nilly throw kit on poles.
Where there are poles they use poles
Where there are ducts they use ducts
And where there are neither, they dig and install ducts
There can be times when they share openreach’s infrastructure to cut costs and get it done a little quicker.
Upon checking mastdatabase there seems to be a lot of overlay and overlay and cab builds. Some are to sort blockages out and others are for pole bending (whatever that one is supposed to mean)
On BID Virgin media (not nexfibre) for some reason are appearing as doing works in Whitstable Kent which also has not had virgin media before, so I presume they are extending over that way too
Great news. I’m just waiting for them to finish up installing their network in Skelmersdale. They passed every house on my estate back in early March but the service is still unavailable to order and nobody will tell me when they’ll be ready to provision new customers.
Until then, I’m stuck at 33mbps.
