Back in the Spring we reported (here) that a new Morden-based broadband ISP called Grayshott Gigabit had been setup with the goal of rolling out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural areas in the East Hampshire, Surrey Hills and surrounding areas. Happily, the build is now well underway.

A new ‘Call for Evidence‘ is being launched by the Government today, which aims to inform their future Wireless Infrastructure Strategy (WIS). This attempts to understand the future wireless connectivity needs of the UK and how they can better support 5G mobile, as well as future satellite, IoT and 6G broadband technologies.

Ofcom Hits UK ISP Colt with GBP15K Fine Over Information Request

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has hit business broadband ISP Colt Technology Services with a small fine of £15,000 over their failure to provide complete information in response to a statutory information request, which was first requested last year as part of the recent Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021 (WFTMR).

Ofcom Finalise One Touch Switching for UK Broadband and Phone UPDATE

Ofcom has today decided to adopt the new ‘One Touch Switch‘ (OTS) process for customers of fixed line phone and broadband ISPs, which will make it easier for you to switch between providers on physically separate networks (e.g. Openreach’s full fibre to CityFibre or Virgin Media etc.). But you’ll have to wait until April 2023 to use it!

The Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT) has issued a preliminary ruling that rejects BT’s attempts to stop a new £600m class action claim against the UK broadband ISP and phone operator, which alleges that they overcharged c.2.3 million landline-only customers between 2015 and 2018.

Gov Proposes Tougher UK Penalties for Nuisance Calls and Texts

Ofcom 2021 Study – Median UK Broadband ISP Speeds Hit 50Mbps

Ofcom has published their annual study into UK fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reports that the average (median) download rate has risen from 50Mbps last year to just 50.4Mbps now (uploads are unchanged at 9.8Mbps). Meanwhile, the performance gap between urban and rural areas remains a problem.

Ofcom Summer 2021 Update – UK Gigabit Cover Hits 40 Percent

Ofcom’s latest Summer 2021 report into UK broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage is now at 24% (up from 21% in Jan 2021) and 11.6 million homes (40%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 37%). Meanwhile, 4G mobile coverage remains stable and there’s still no data on 5G.
