Ofcom has confirmed that UK consumers who take a landline-only phone service from BT will, from Sunday, pay £7 a month less for their line rental (i.e. £11.99 inc. VAT instead of £18.99). As part of the agreement BT will also cap line rental and call charges, to increase by no more than inflation, for 3 years.

Ofcom has today published a final statement on their recent UK Wholesale Local Access Market Review (WLAMR), which is broadly unchanged from last month’s major announcement (here) but there has been a tweak to wholesale FTTC “fibre broadband” pricing for UK ISPs.

As promised the Government has today set out their chosen design for the new Universal Service Obligation (USO), which pledges to give everybody in the United Kingdom the “legal right” to request a 10Mbps+ capable “high speed broadband” connection from 2020, but challenges remain.

A new Mystery Shopper study conducted by consumer magazine Which? has revealed that major broadband ISPs are only giving the required information about connection speeds under Ofcom’s Code of Practice (CoP) less than half (47%) of the time, with some (e.g. TalkTalk) doing worse than others.

Fixed wireless access ISP Connexin, which operates broadband networks in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), has this morning suddenly dropped out of next week’s UK auction for the 4G friendly 2.3GHz mobile spectrum band and the 5G friendly 3.4GHz band.

The national telecoms regulator has today confirmed that their auction of 4G and 5G friendly Mobile spectrum, which will see 40MHz of frequency in the 2.3GHz band (2350-2390MHz) and 150MHz in the 3.4GHz band (3410-3480MHz and 3500-3580MHz) being distributed, will begin on Tuesday 20th March.

The UK telecoms regulator has today launched a new consultation, which seeks to establish what sort of future 4G or 5G based coverage obligation will be attached to the 700MHz band of radio spectrum for mobile network operators (due to be auctioned off during late 2019).

Openreach’s new Optical Spectrum Access product (OSA Filter Connect / FSP3000), which has been created as a sort of soft alternative to Ofcom’s stalled Dark Fibre Access (DFA) solution, will officially be made available to ISPs from 3rd April 2018 and initially offer data speeds of around 10-20Gbps.

The Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator (OTA2) confirms that UK ISPs have raised a new Statement of Requirement (SOR) request to encourage more data sharing for both ADSL and FTTC (VDSL2) based broadband products, which could result in a more effective engineer repair process.
