Ofcom’s planned auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands might soon proceed after the High Court rejected an appeal by Three UK, which had demanded that the regulator impose a 30% spectrum cap in order to stop EE (BT) from bidding.

After a final consultation (here) the Government has today revealed its chosen path for implementing a new legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which promises a minimum broadband download speed of 10Mbps (1Mbps upload) for all by 2020 and rejects BT’s £600m voluntary proposal.

Ofcom has today introduced a new change that means switching Mobile Network Operator (2G, 3G or 4G) in the United Kingdom will now become as easy as simply sending a free text message, although the new system won’t be fully introduced for another 18 months (1st July 2019).

The Government has today issued an update on the progress of their 5G strategy, which aims to help foster the UK roll-out of next generation ultrafast Mobile Broadband technology. As part of that they’ve launched a new call for evidence to understand “what makes investing in [full fibre] and 5G attractive.”

Market regulator Ofcom has today published its International Communications Market Report 2017, which compares broadband and other telecoms services in the United Kingdom against 16 other countries. The UK fairs well for 30Mbps+ broadband coverage but our “full fibre” (FTTP/H) needs work.

Ofcom has published their final UK Code of Practice for the Government’s reformed Electronic Communications Code (ECC), which aims to make it easier and cheaper for mobile and broadband operators’ to deploy new infrastructure (masts, fibre optic cables etc.) on public or private land.

The Connected Nations 2017 report has today been published by Ofcom, which reveals a huge rise in the availability of fixed line 300Mbps+ “ultrafast broadband” services to 36% of the UK (up from 2% last year). Elsewhere 4% (1.1 million premises) still cannot receive speeds of 10Mbps+ (down from 6%).

The British economist and former Chairman of Channel 4, Lord Burns (Terence Burns), has today officially been named as the new chairman of telecoms and media regulator Ofcom. Lord Burns will take up the position on 1st January 2018 after Dame Patricia Hodgson steps down.

Vodafone’s move earlier this year to introduce a new Mobile roaming charge for UK customers travelling in 60 countries outside of the EU (£5 a day on Pay Monthly plans) left some light users out of pocket, but Ofcom has now encouraged the operator to do more to tackle this.

Ofcom has today proposed changes that could result in faster fixed wireless data and broadband links, such as exploring the potential for radio spectrum above 92GHz, changing the authorisation regime in the 64-66GHz band to licence exempt and expanding the use cases for 57-66 GHz (V band).

The CEO of Ofcom, Sharon White, has claimed that Openreach’s (BT) aspiration to conduct a “large-scale” rollout of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 10 million UK homes and businesses by around 2025 is “dependent on up to £7 a month being added to broadband bills.”

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has opened a new consultation on a change to help foster the roll-out of “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband networks by preventing BT from reducing its wholesale charges for slower hybrid fibre (FTTC) connections in areas where rivals are building new networks.

Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) ISPs could soon be able to offer faster connection speeds after Ofcom today confirmed their decision to release an extra 20MHz notch of radio spectrum in the 5.8GHz band (5725-5850MHz) for use by related internet access providers.

Ofcom has published their latest report into the use of media by UK children and parents, which among other things finds that around two in five parents of children aged 3-4 (39%) or 5-15 (37%) use network-level filters on their home broadband ISP. The vast majority of those find them useful.

The telecoms regulator has today made several changes to improve the performance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) providers, which are third-party ombudsman schemes that help consumers to resolve complaints with UK phone, broadband and mobile providers etc.

A new provider called Cambridge Fibre Networks, which doesn’t yet appear to have a website, has applied to Ofcom for Code Powers in order to help it construct a new multi-Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband network for homes and businesses around the East and West of Cambridge.

The UK telecoms regulator has today announced that they are revoking and re-examining the changes imposed under their 2016 Business Connectivity Market Review (e.g. Dark Fibre Access), which follows a BT supported ruling from the Competition Appeal Tribunal against their market definitions.
