Ofcom’s proposal to force Openreach (BT) into significantly cutting the wholesale price of their ‘up to’ 40Mbps (10Mbps upload) FTTC “fibre broadband” product for ISPs has been dealt a blow after the Government warned it would “disincentivise investment” in new “full fibre” (FTTP/H) networks.

A survey of 1,709 UK telecoms customers in June to July 2017, which was conducted by Which?, found that 53% had experienced a “problem with their broadband” in the last year. Sadly customers of Virgin Media (61%), TalkTalk (60%), Sky Broadband (56%) and BT (54%) were “most likely” to suffer.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has begun an investigation of Lycamobile in order to determine whether the operator breached industry regulations for EU mobile roaming, not least by levying a surcharge and applying overly strict data (3G, 4G) roaming limits.

The Government has today laid draft regulations in Parliament that revise the Electronic Communications Code (ECC) in order to make it easier and cheaper for network operators to roll-out new broadband and telecoms infrastructure (masts, cables etc.) on public and private land.

Openreach has today advised us about the forthcoming launch of their new Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) product for ISPs (OSA Filter Connect), which appears to be a Dark Fibre style solution that has been designed to address many of the perceived failings of a “one-size fits all” regulated product.

The Chief Executive of the UK telecoms regulator, Sharon White, has told a cross-party committee of MPs that a “key test” of Ofcom’s new regulatory approach to BT will be whether or not Openreach can “do a co-investment deal with another operator” following their “full fibre” broadband consultation.

Fixed wireless ISP Boundless Networks has revealed that they intend to bid on Phase 3 of the state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire project, which if successful would expand their “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) network to cover 25,000 premises in rural areas across the county.

The Government has today published their Internet Safety Strategy green paper, which sets out how they intend to tackle online dangers like cyber-bullying, trolling and under-age access to porn. But it also appears to soften earlier plans for a mandatory approach to network-level ISP internet censorship.

The telecoms regulator has today given Inmarsat‘s plan to improve broadband connectivity on-board aircraft a boost by granting them a wireless telegraphy licence for ground based stations using the 2GHz band, which forms part of its Satellite based European Aviation Network (EAN).

Consumers will soon benefit from more accurate information on what broadband line speeds they can expect from their ISP and what they can do if this isn’t delivered. The changes form part of a proposed update to Ofcom’s voluntary code of practice for residential speeds.

Broadband providers Virgin Media and Sky Broadband have today been praised by Ofcom’s Q2 2017 UK consumer complaints report after they received fewer gripes than any other ISP for their service. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for BT and TalkTalk, which attracted the most complaints.

Mobile operators O2, Three UK and Vodafone have warned that a recent decision by Ofcom, which prevented them from accessing Openreach’s (BT) existing cable ducts and telegraph poles in order to build new fibre optic backhaul links, could hinder the deployment of future ultrafast 5G Mobile services.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has formally lodged a legal appeal against the matter of Ofcom’s forthcoming 4G / 5G radio spectrum auction in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands. The aim is to stop Three UK’s own challenge from imposing a cap on their ability to bid for a slice of 3.4GHz band.
