The United Kingdom’s national telecoms regulator has today published its final assessment on their much delayed plans to hike the annual licence fees for the 900MHz and 1800MHz radio spectrum bands, which has seen the costs come down again.. but only a little.

The telecoms regulator has published its latest quarterly report into the volume of complaints experienced by all of the United Kingdom’s largest broadband, phone, mobile and TV providers. As usual the news is good for some providers (e.g. Sky Broadband, Virgin Media) and bad for others (e.g. EE).

The Institute of Directors (IoD), INCA and Self-Employed & Freelancer Association (IPSE) have today joined Sky (Sky Broadband), TalkTalk and Vodafone in a new open letter that calls for the telecoms regulator to subject BT to a competition probe, which could result in the operator being split up.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has ratcheted up the pressure on Ofcom’s Strategic Review of the UK’s digital communications market, which will decide whether or not to separate BT from control of their telecoms and broadband network, by criticising the operator’s alleged lack of investment and interest in building a national Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network.

Several major telecoms operators (Cityfibre, Virgin Media, euNetworks and Zayo) have joined forces to create the Infrastructure Investors Group (IIG) and they oppose the UK regulators move to open up access to BT’s Dark Fibre lines for rival providers. BT will be pleased.

The Federation of Small Businesses has today published a new telecoms focused report that once again calls upon the Government to introduce a plan for “ultrafast broadband” and a new Universal Service Obligation (USO) that would deliver a minimum Internet speed of 10Mbps to all.

The national telecoms regulator has opened a new investigation after Vodafone complained that BTOpenreach failed to meet its obligations to them by both “delaying provision” of its Ethernet (high-capacity data line) services without their consent and then “failing to compensate” for that delay.

Ofcom’s latest Telecoms Market Data update has revealed that the United Kingdom achieved a milestone of 24 million fixed line residential and small business broadband ISP connections (excluding corporate lines) in Q1 2015 (up by +277K since Q4 2014), which is 967,000 (4.2%) more than a year ago.

BT’s proposed £12.5bn UK merger with mobile giant EE has been given a boost after the national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, advised the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that it didn’t have any major objections to the deal and suggested that existing regulation could tackle most concerns.

Do you also remember how BT then tried to force that pack onto their existing customers, unless they specifically opted-out? Well Ofcom wasn’t happy and neither were many of BT’s customers.
