The UK High Court has dismissed Liberty‘s legal challenge against the Government’s bulk data retention policy in its 2016 Investigatory Powers Act (IPAct), which is a mass surveillance approach that also catches innocent peoples communications data (i.e. phone, mobile and internet activity). The UK Government’s new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has announced a £3.6bn Towns Fund to support an initial 100 towns “so that they will get the improved transport and improved broadband connectivity that they need,” although yesterday’s speech to the Manchester Science and Industry Museum didn’t include any detail.

Northern Ireland’s £165m Broadband Plan to Help 98000 Premises

Government Approve £24m Full Fibre Rollout for North of Tyne Region

The UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme has approved a £12m bid from the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA), which will support the rollout of a new Gigabit capable fibre optic network to public sector sites across rural parts of Newcastle, North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear) and Northumberland.

Government Points to Citizens Advice as New UK Consumer Advocate

The Citizens Advice agency has today been tentatively labelled as the “preferred option” by the UK Government to take on the new independent role of “consumer advocate,” which among other things will be given the task of tackling “unfair” practices within the UK telecoms market (broadband ISPs and mobile operators).

Full Fibre Broadband Coverage of UK New Build Homes Hits 77.8%

A new analysis of broadband coverage in the UK has indicated that 77.8% of new build homes constructed across the whole of 2019 so far were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 70.5% in 2018), which rises to 94% for “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage (up from 93% last year).

The Voluntary Copyright Alert Program (VCAP), which has so far seen broadband ISPs in the UK send around 1 million “educational” internet piracy warning emails (“subscriber alerts“) to consumers they suspect of taking part in copyright infringement, has been ceased because it “served [its] purpose.”

Cityfibre Confirm 14 UK Towns and Cities for Phase 2 FTTH Rollout

Cityfibre has today confirmed the next 14 UK cities and towns (only three are new additions) to benefit from Phase Two their £2.5bn rollout of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network, which is being supported by residential ISP partner Vodafone and aims to cover 5 million premises by 2025.

Glasgow and London Underground May Trial 5G Infotainment

A joint £2.4m UK project with South Korea looks set to trial how ultrafast 5G wireless data connections could be used to support “uninterrupted infotainment services” (i.e. travel services, entertainment and advertising) for commuters travelling around the Glasgow Metro, as well as possibly the London Underground.
