The National Farmers Union (NFU) has published the results from their annual digital access survey of 661 members (conducted between February and March 2025), which found that just 33% of farmers had access to “fibre broadband” speeds and nearly one out of ten respondents have no 4G or 5G mobile access.

The UK Government has this morning revealed that a total of 30 publicly-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across Wales as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which recently succeeded (here) in extending geographic 4G coverage from at least one operator to 95% of the UK (aggregate).

The UK Government’s Department for Education (DfE) has today set out “six standards” that it hopes will end the “postcode lottery of school technology” and help to close the digital divide. The standards cover broadband internet, wireless networks, network switches, digital leadership, plus two safety requirements: cyber security and filtering and monitoring to keep pupils safe online.

Edinburgh-based ISP and network builder GoFibre has secured a fourth contract under the UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit scheme. The new deal is worth £105m (state aid) and will see them expand their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover “around” 63,000 premises in hard-to-reach rural areas of North East Scotland.

Telecoms giant BT and Openreach are appealing a recent decision by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), which made them subject to public information requests about their UK broadband network under the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR). The decision could potentially provide communities and rivals with a new avenue for extracting useful info.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT (EE) has published a new report from Assembly Research, which suggests that the UK is one of the hardest countries for building new mobile broadband infrastructure and has called for more reform of the planning rules (e.g. allowing taller masts). The prize, claims the report, could be to unlock up to £230bn in economic benefits by 2035.

More hosepipe bans are now starting to come into force to help tackle water shortages during the increasingly dry summer months. Partly as the response to that, the UK Government’s Environment Agency (EA) has recently begun recommending that people help to save water by “deleting old emails to reduce pressure on data centre servers“.

Digital infrastructure builder CityFibre has today announced that they’ve reached a crucial UK funding agreement worth £2.3bn (mix of debt and equity). The deal will support the ongoing deployment of their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network and also drive a new wave of consolidation.

The issue of mobile broadband networks and human health just cropped up again after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) published the outcome from its “extensive programme of research” to assess exposures from 5G Base Stations. The study found exposure to radio waves from 5G remain “well below the guidelines” and is “generally lower or similar” to 4G EMF exposure.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’ve kicked off the construction phase for several of their recently awarded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts with the government (BDUK), including in remote rural parts of Lancashire, Wales, Devon, Hertfordshire, Staffordshire and Wiltshire.

Alternative UK network provider Wildanet has announced that they’ve now built their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband service to an additional 10,000 premises in rural Cornwall. The effort forms part of the three contracts they hold with the government’s wider £5bn Project Gigabit programme, which are worth £77m (state aid).

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and Neos Networks have today confirmed the completion of their £7.25m “GigaHubs” project, which has now connected 192 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.) to a new 1,500km long gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network.

The UK government yesterday revealed the time and date for its next major nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts service by mobile network operators, which will take place at “around” 3pm on 7th September 2025. This is normally only intended to be used if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (e.g. severe flooding, fires and extreme weather).

Alternative broadband ISP Brsk (Netomnia) has been fined £14,000 by Ofcom over its roll-out of hundreds of new 9 metre high telecoms poles in the city of Birmingham, which were installed to support the roll-out of a new full fibre (FTTP) network. But they were today found to have breached two conditions under the Electronic Communications Code (ECC).

The LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig) organisation, which offers an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has conducted an industry-wide survey to identify the greatest concerns which remain around the Government’s new digital UK map of underground pipes and cables (broadband, water etc.), ahead of its integration.

Hull-based network operator KCOM, which has already deployed their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across a big chunk of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, has today quietly published their first terms and pricing details for a new PIA solution. The product allows rivals to run new fibre via the operator’s existing cable ducts and poles.

CityFibre, which has so far deployed their 5.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.4 million UK premises, has just connected its first customers in Buckinghamshire (inc. Hertfordshire and East Berkshire) as part of their £58m (state aid) Project Gigabit contract (LOT 26) to reach 34,000 hard-to-reach rural premises in the county.
