New £4.44m Contract Set to Rollout Full Fibre in South Essex UK

The Thurrock Council has announced that a contract for delivery of the £4.436 million state aid funded Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) build across South Essex, which aims to connect 129 public sector sites across Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Rochford and Thurrock with gigabit capable broadband, will soon be awarded.

City of London Corp Giving Out Free 4G Mobile Data and Dongle

The City of London Corporation has today announced that they will be handing out a “one off pre-loaded dongle device free of charge that will provide data to access the internet,” which will be provided to those who may be unable to leave home as a result of COVID-19 or cannot afford their own broadband access.

MLL Telecom Win Nottinghamshire Wide Area Network Contract

Business ISP MLL Telecom has today announced that they’ve been chosen by Nottinghamshire County Council as the sole UK supplier for a regional 4-year framework and the related provision of Wide Area Network (WAN) services (site-to-site and site-to-internet/cloud connectivity). The framework has a value of £250m.

Vodafone Reach First UK Village via 4G Shared Rural Network

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that the small village of Devauden in the Wye Valley (Wales) has become the first to receive a faster 4G based mobile (mobile broadband) service as part of the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN), which aims to help extend geographic 4G cover to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025.

Cross-party UK MPs Seek Free Broadband for 1.3 Million Kids

A cross-party group of MPs will this week reportedly propose a new bill, which seeks to help solve the current COVID-19 (Coronavirus) induced education crisis by requiring that up to 1.3 million school children (i.e. those eligible for free school meals) are also equipped with free broadband connectivity to help them learn.

Scotland’s R100 Broadband Voucher Scheme Set for Summer

The Scottish Government‘s Minister for Connectivity, Paul Wheelhouse, has confirmed that their new voucher scheme for poorly served areas (i.e. those that cannot access “superfast broadband” 30Mbps+) is set to go live this summer. The scheme will be accompanied by a new online “premises level” eligibility checker.

UK Ranks 8th in 2020 EU Broadband Connectivity Progress Study

The European Commission has today published their annual 2020 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which reveals how the UK’s fixed line broadband ISP and mobile networks compare with the rest of the EU. Overall the UK ranks just 20th for “Connectivity” (up from 21st in 2019), but we do better in other areas.

Government May Open UK Utilities Infrastructure for Broadband

The UK government (DCMS) will today launch a call for evidence as part of a new review of the Access to Infrastructure (ATI) Regulations 2016, which could enable “gigabit-capable” broadband operators to expand their networks by harnessing existing electricity, gas, water and sewer networks via infrastructure sharing.

Cityfibre Plan to Boost UK Fibre Rollout via 10,000 New Jobs

Cityfibre has today announced a major recruitment and training drive, which over the next 3 years will see them create 10,000 jobs (engineers etc.). The move supports their £4bn investment (here) to roll-out a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across 8 million UK premises by around 2025.

Cityfibre Begin £32m Full Fibre Broadband Build in Portsmouth UK

Full fibre operator Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve started work on their latest £32m project to deploy a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the south coast city of Portsmouth (Hampshire, UK), which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone (with TalkTalk to follow).

Gigaclear Expands FTTP Rollout in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire

Rural UK ISP Gigaclear has announced that they’ve completed a revision of their “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband roll-out contract with the Fastershire project in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire (England), which alongside their commercial commitment initially planned to cover more than 70,000 premises but will now reach 110,000.

Report Reveals the Barriers to UK Gigabit Broadband Adoption

The Broadband Stakeholder Group, which is a think-tank that advises the UK Government, has today published a new report from WIK to help highlight some of the barriers that remain (other than coverage) to getting customers to adopt “gigabit-capable” broadband ISP connections ahead of the copper switch-off.

Openreach Scoop Suffolk’s Phase 3 Superfast Broadband Rollout

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they will deliver “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage to an additional 5,000 homes and 550 businesses in Suffolk UK (mostly rural areas) after securing the contract for Phase 3 of the state aid supported Better Broadband for Suffolk (BBS) project, which we assume will use FTTP.

Guernsey ISP Sure to Replace 10G with 100G Core Network

The incumbent broadband ISP and mobile network operator for the English Channel Island of Guernsey, Sure, has today chosen UK technology and network services company telent to help upgrade their existing 10G (10Gbps) network with a 100G Juniper Networks core.

North Yorkshire UK Prep Phase 4 Superfast Broadband Rollout

The Superfast Broadband North Yorkshire (SFNY) project, which has been working with Openreach (BT) to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) via FTTC and FTTP to reach 94% of premises in the county by June 2021 (currently 91%), has begun the process to find a supplier for their £12.5m Phase 4 roll-out contract.

Progress Update for Wales Full Fibre Broadband Rollout with BT

The Welsh Government (WG) has issued their first quarterly progress update on the £22.5m Phase 2 contract they have with Openreach (BT), which aims to extend gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband to a further 26,000 premises by March 2021 (here and here). So far 8,283 rural premises have been completed.

1Gbps Broadband for 35 Rural Schools in Dumfries and Galloway

The Dumfries and Galloway Council (DGC) in Scotland has secured a public investment of £1.36M under the UK Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which will be used to help 35 rural primary schools in the region to access a new “gigabit-capable” broadband or Ethernet connection.
