Independent satellite installation company Satworks, which is based in Bolton and Blackburn and has around 180 engineers across the country, has announced that they’ve signed an agreement with Starlink’s (SpaceX) broadband service to become its “sole installation partner throughout the United Kingdom” – effective from later next month.

Good news if you’re one of the few who live on the remote Ascension Island, which is a British Overseas Territory that sits in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean and is home to almost 900 people (many of them visitors and rotating military personnel). Starlink’s ultrafast satellite broadband service has just gone live.

The latest Q2 2026 results from network operators Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today reported a fall in consumer broadband customers of -28,200 to total 5,417,900 (vs -5.3k in Q1), while their mobile base declined slightly to total 46.428m (down from 46.44m) and outdoor 5G+ (5GSA) population coverage remains at 86%.

Remember when Nik Fox, a UK broadcast technology expert, accused Elon Musk’s popular space-based broadband ISP, Starlink (SpaceX), of hitting consumers with a “predatory … hardware trap” a couple of months ago (here)? The satellite provider has since failed to respond to a related legal claim and is now facing a High Court Writ of Control, which could result in direct asset seizure.

Network engineer Oleg Kutkov has leaked that Starlink’s next-gen Mini 2 dish terminal, which has yet to be officially introduced, has “finally entered production” and is confirmed to have a built-in “4S battery“, which usually refers to a Lithium Polymer (LiPo) or Li-ion pack with four individual cells wired in series. Further details have also been leaked.

The government’s UK Space Agency has today opened up the third funding round under their 4-year £160m Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO) programme, which is offering £42m to develop new satellite technologies and components to help supply “high-speed internet, communications and data services” around the world.

The ever-changeable packages and pricing of Starlink’s (SpaceX) satellite-based ultrafast broadband service took yet another twist just before the weekend. The provider suddenly seemed to drop the extra £10 per month charge for hardware rental (dish, router etc.) with new customers, which was somewhat sneakily introduced last month.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has confirmed to ISPreview that they’re “actively engaged in international efforts to find solutions” to the problem raised by a recent study, which warned that ground-based telescopes might soon become useless if the number of satellites in Earth’s orbit exceeds 100,000 (i.e. those with below naked eye visibility).

The Starlink (SpaceX) service, which operates a massive constellation of low latency and ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for the UK and the world, has finally published the specifications for their next generation V5 dish terminal. In short, it’s smaller, lighter weight and doesn’t gobble as much power, but peak service speeds are slightly slower.

SpaceX has revealed that the next test launch of their future Starship rocket (flight 13), which is scheduled to take place on Thursday night this week (occurring after 23:45), will attempt to deploy 20 of their next generation V3 (GEN3) Starlink broadband satellites “for the first time” (these will not be dummy demonstrators like before). But they’ll only last a few minutes.

The UK telecoms, internet content and media regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed to ISPreview that the availability of Starlink’s ultrafast satellite broadband service now means that fewer customers may need to request the 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) from BT across much of the country (or KCOM in Hull).

Astronomy is under threat like never before. A significant new study, which was conducted by astronomers from the European Southern Observatory (ESO), has warned that if the number of satellites in Earth’s orbit exceeds 100,000 (i.e. those with below naked eye visibility) then the human race may lose its ability observe the night sky with modern telescopes.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that their Direct-to-Device (D2D) based O2 Satellite service (here), which for £3 extra per month enables normal Smartphones to connect to their mobile network via Starlink’s cell-focused broadband satellites, now also works on Google Pixel devices (phones).

Communications provider Clarus Networks has this morning announced that they’ve reached an agreement to become an authorised reseller of the Amazon Leo (Project Kuiper) service, which reflects a huge constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) – available to the UK and globally.

The UK telecoms and internet content regulator, Ofcom, has published a revised guidance document on network resilience, which was first published in 2024 (here) to give broadband, mobile and other digital network providers greater clarity on how they can “reduce the risk of network outages“. The new update clarifies their stance on power backup for mobile cell / mast sites.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed to give other operators access to harness the 2GHz radio spectrum band for Mobile Satellite Services (MMS), such as to support Direct-to-Device (DtD) solutions for connecting 4G and 5G Smartphones. Separately, they’ve also proposed to make more spectrum available for Earth Station in Motion (ESIM) satellite terminals on ships and aircraft.
