SpaceX’s popular Starlink service, which offers ultrafast low-latency broadband speed across the world via a mega constellation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), suffered another global outage this morning that started at around 5am. But services now appear to be returning to normal for many, but not all, users.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that they will “move ahead with plans” to make the UK the “first country in Europe” to authorise Direct to Device (D2D) satellite services for use in regular mobile bands via “standard smartphones“. The change could be used to help mobile operators improve their 4G and 5G coverage and roaming features.

Online retail giant Amazon has conducted a speed test on their initial deployments of Project Kuiper broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which demonstrated a peak download speed hitting 1.29Gbps (Gigabits per second). But this is naturally on a new network, without any capacity strains (real-world load) from other users.

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which sells ultrafast broadband to the UK and globally via a mega constellation using thousands of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has revealed the development of a new “mini laser” that will enable their satellites to connect with “third party satellites and space stations“.

Meridian Space LEO Satellite by SpinLaunch

21st August, 2025 (2 Comments)

The company responsible for developing a system of sending micro-satellites up into orbit by using a massive centrifuge instead of rockets, SpinLaunch, has partnered with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to help it separately develop a new global network of highly compact ultrafast broadband satellites – called ‘Meridian Space‘ – for Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which sells ultrafast broadband to the UK and globally via masses of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has done what some might consider a bit of a ‘bait-and-switch’ by suddenly replacing their ‘Pause Mode‘ (i.e. allowing you to stop and restart the service at no extra cost) with a new ‘Standby Mode‘ that costs £4.50 per month.

The North Yorkshire Council (NYC) in England has proposed to wind-up the NYNet 100 company, which was originally created to help carry out procurement and contract management for the local authority’s Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project. This has helped 201,000 premises in the rural county to access faster broadband over the last 15 years.

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds to the UK and globally via a massive constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), appears to have leaked out plans for a new “Community” product that could allow multiple subscribers to share access to the service via a single terminal (dish) in return for a cheaper rental.

The VP of Engineering at satellite broadband operator Starlink (SpaceX), Michael Nicolls, has revealed that last night’s 2.5 hour long network outage of their mega constellation – impacting all terminals (business and residential) – was caused by a “failure of key internal software services” in their core network.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today unveiled their proposals for allowing broadband satellite operators (e.g. Starlink and Amazon) to harness the Q and V radio spectrum bands (37.5–43.5GHz, 47.2–50.2GHz and 50.4–52.4GHz) to help boost the backhaul data capacity of their ground-based gateway sites. This will also support the deployment of future satellites.

OneWeb First Generation Satellite in Orbit

21st July, 2025 (1 Comment)

In a not particularly surprising development, the UK government has today chosen Eutelsat’s global network of OneWeb ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to help provide “resilient, high-speed, low-latency connectivity” to their global operations – delivered through distribution partner NSSLGlobal.

The UK telecoms regulator has today launched a new ‘Call for Input‘ to help it decide on the future of the 2GHz radio spectrum band (1980-2010MHz and 2170-2200MHz), which could potentially open it up to wider use for providing broadband connectivity to aircraft and drones, direct-to-device services (4G/5G mobile), and or IoT etc.

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds to the UK and globally via a massive constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has published a new network update that reveals how the first of their third generation (GEN3) satellites will launch during the first half of 2026. Assuming their Starship rockets stop exploding.

A newly published study from researchers at the University of California (Department of Physics and Astronomy) has found that Starlink’s (SpaceX) second generation (v2) broadband satellites, which sit in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), are darker than V1s despite being much larger (both bus and solar arrays). The results represent good news for astronomers.

The UK Government has agreed to commit a further £140m (€163.3) of public investment to help Eutelsat grow and expand its constellation of OneWeb ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The funding will be combined with other investments, such as €750m from France (the French State), to support a total capital increase of €1.5 billion (£1.29bn).
