Aviation and technology company Boeing has completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the first two ViaSat-3 class satellites, which will be able to handle 1 Terabit per second of data and make it possible to offer 100Mbps packages to home users in the Americas, UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

A new TNS survey of 2,012 British “adults” aged 16-64, which was commissioned by Satellite provider ViaSat, has revealed that 72% don’t believe the Government is doing enough to meet future broadband needs, while many others are confused about the reality of current service coverage and speeds.

The International Airlines Group and Satellite ISP Inmarsat have announced that in-flight WiFi will be introduced to 341 short-haul aircraft, including 132 British Airways, 125 Vueling, 45 Iberia and 39 Aer Lingus aircraft.

The CEO of UK ISP Europasat (Satellite Solutions Worldwide), Andrew Walwyn, has told ISPreview.co.uk in our latest interview that the Government’s plan to introduce a 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband “cannot be satisfied” without subsidised Satellite technology.

BT has said that the Government can avoid imposing a tricky industry levy on ISPs or using public funding to help pay for the proposed 10Mbps broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO) because they’ll take the full responsibility, as well as pushing superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to 97-98% of the UK.

Satellite Internet, which supplies Satellite based broadband connectivity using the SES (ASTRA) platform, has welcomed a revision to the Government’s “2Mbps to all” broadband support scheme that means subsidies are “now being passed directly” to those who actually deliver the service (i.e. ISPs).

Satellite Solutions Worldwide, which owns Satellite broadband ISP Europasat, has effectively doubled its customer base to around 35,000 users across Europe by acquiring rival UK provider Avonline for a cool £10m. A further undisclosed payment may also be made, depending upon performance.

A new survey of over 9,000 aircraft passengers from 27 countries, which was conducted by GfK on behalf of Inmarsat, has revealed that 92% of respondents would like to access on-board Internet connectivity but only if it’s of a good quality (60% might not connect to a poor service).

A team of German scientists have successfully achieved a record data rate of 6Gbps (Gigabits per second) over a distance of 36.7 kilometres by harnessing part of the E band spectrum, which operates at a radio frequency of 71-76GHz (GigaHertz). The new development could be used to boost both terrestrial and Satellite broadband capacity links.

The telecoms regulator has today published a new Spectrum Sharing Framework and opened a consultation (Call for Input) to investigate whether radio spectrum in the 3.8GHz to 4.2GHz bands should be shared. The bands are currently used by satellite earth stations, fixed links and by the wireless provider UK Broadband Ltd.
