The CEO of ISP EuropaSat, Andrew Walwyn, has warned that the Government’s rural broadband subsidy scheme for meeting the 2Mbps Universal Service Commitment (USC) is suffering from low uptake because its “very complicated” and the subsidy (up to around £350) is too small.

The UK telecoms regulator has launched its new ‘Space Spectrum Strategy‘ (PDF) consultation, which among other things aims to enable growth in broadband communications provided via Satellite to hard to reach locations on land (rural areas), ships and aircraft.

Inmarsat’s slow moving plan to improve broadband connectivity on aircraft took another step forward today after Ofcom launched a consultation to authorise new terrestrial base stations, which should allow “direct air-to-ground” Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) to aircraft via the 2GHz band.

Satellite operators Eutelsat and ViaSat have announced that they’re teaming up via a Joint Venture. On top of that ViaSat has also announced plans to build three new ViaSat-3 spacecraft, which could deliver broadband speeds of 100Mbps+ to customers around Europe and possibly the UK.

Cross-platform Satellite broadband ISP Europasat, which offers a choice of space-based Internet access services from operators like Eutelsat (Tooway), Avanti (HYLAS) and SES (Astra), has today announced that over 1,000 homes and businesses in Wales have already taken their service.

In an interesting development the Government appears to have extended its £60m 2Mbps for all rural broadband (USC) subsidy scheme to include fixed wireless ISP Quickline in Lincolnshire (England), which is big change from the initial focus on Satellite based solutions.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the Government’s new Satellite broadband subsidy scheme, which aims to help 300,000 of the most remote rural premises in the United Kingdom (note: Wales has a different scheme) to get a better connection, has got off to a slow start with only £8,400 spent of the £60 million funding.

The National Farmers Union (NFU), which supports around 55,000 members across the United Kingdom, has criticised the Government’s new Satellite broadband subsidy scheme. The organisation warns that the solution “does not work that well for everyone” and might struggle to meet its targets.
