A recent study from New Street Research has predicted that the UK will lose around 250,000 subscribers to fixed broadband services this year, which would mark “the first time there has ever been a decline” in the market. Competition from Starlink (satellite), fixed wireless and mobile broadband rivals are said to be the main cause.

SpaceX’s global Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds across the UK and globally via a mega constellation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has provided their best view yet of what the company’s next generation v3 (GEN3) satellites will look like when deployed to orbit. Each one will have 10 times more capacity than earlier v2 satellites.

ISPreview has spotted that the Welsh Government (WG) have today issued a formal tender notice for their £70m (state aid) “Extending High Speed Broadband” (EHSB) project for Wales. In its current form, this aims to help extend faster broadband to around 29,000 premises in poorly served areas (i.e. locations that can’t yet access 30Mbps+ speeds).

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects broadband performance data from consumers via their popular Speedtest.net service, has examined the onboard WiFi performance of train services across Europe (inc. some Asian rail networks) and found that the United Kingdom delivers some of the slowest internet speeds on trains.

Internet retail giant Amazon recently turned up at the UK’s DSEI 2025 Defence Exhibition & Trade Show in London to showcase their Project Kuiper network of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Transport for Wales (TfW), which is a not-for-profit organisation owned by the Welsh Government, has begun trials of a new satellite internet solution to connect the unique demand-responsive transport (DRT) based fflecsi bus services in the rural area of Machynlleth (Powys). Users of the service can now benefit from onboard WiFi.

The UK broadband, media and communications regulator, Ofcom, has today opened a new consultation that proposes to improve the existing license process for non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) systems, such as those like Starlink, OneWeb and others that offer broadband from satellites in a Low or Medium Earth Orbit (LEO and MEO).

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that they will “move ahead with plans” to make the UK the “first country in Europe” to authorise Direct to Device (D2D) satellite services for use in regular mobile bands via “standard smartphones“. The change could be used to help mobile operators improve their 4G and 5G coverage and roaming features.

Online retail giant Amazon has conducted a speed test on their initial deployments of Project Kuiper broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which demonstrated a peak download speed hitting 1.29Gbps (Gigabits per second). But this is naturally on a new network, without any capacity strains (real-world load) from other users.

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which sells ultrafast broadband to the UK and globally via masses of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has done what some might consider a bit of a ‘bait-and-switch’ by suddenly replacing their ‘Pause Mode‘ (i.e. allowing you to stop and restart the service at no extra cost) with a new ‘Standby Mode‘ that costs £4.50 per month.

The North Yorkshire Council (NYC) in England has proposed to wind-up the NYNet 100 company, which was originally created to help carry out procurement and contract management for the local authority’s Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project. This has helped 201,000 premises in the rural county to access faster broadband over the last 15 years.
