A new study from a team of three researchers working out of the University of California (USA) has taken a “deep dive” into the impact of solar storms on Starlink’s global network of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The results uncovered some “previously overlooked patterns” of vulnerability and suggest that “more adaptive, region-aware mitigation strategies” may be needed.

The Starlink (SpaceX) internet service, which reflects a mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), recently introduced a new residential package for consumers – currently only available in the USA (but it may yet come to the UK) – that caps download speeds at 100Mbps, but drops the monthly price to just $50 (c.£30).

Internet retail giant Amazon has announced that their in-development Project Kuiper constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) has been renamed to Amazon Leo. The first customer connections are also now expected to go live by the end of this year – initially in the US, Canada, UK, Germany and France.

Good news if you fly British Airways. The associated International Airlines Group (IAG), which also includes Aer Lingus, Iberia, LEVEL and Vueling aircraft, has reached an agreement with SpaceX’s global Starlink service to upgrade 500+ of their planes (long and short-haul) to harness the ultrafast broadband constellation in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for in-flight WiFi.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has this morning announced a “landmark agreement” to make Starlink’s mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) available to their consumer broadband customers in “rural and remote areas“, where traditional fixed-line infrastructure is “economically unviable or geographically challenging” to build.

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has, after plenty of confusion and debate earlier in the year (here and here), finally granted a VSAT Broadband Connectivity Licence to SpaceX’s Starlink service. The move allows homes and businesses on the remote islands, which are a British Overseas Territory, to take an ultrafast internet service via Starlink’s satellite network.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today granted a new gateway licence for Amazon’s future Project Kuiper network. The move supports the retail giant’s effort to launch a global mega-constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which will deliver affordable ultrafast broadband and mobile (4G, 5G) services to rival Starlink (SpaceX).

The latest Q3 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 have revealed that their FTTP broadband network increased its coverage by 139,300 premises in the quarter (up from 114.9k in Q2). Similarly, related customers grew to total 5,704,300 (up by 60.8k in Q3 vs -51.4k in Q2) and O2’s mobile base jumped by 419,400 in the quarter, while also doing a multi-year deal with Starlink for satellite mobile (Direct to Cell).

A lot of people use SpaceX’s LEO satellite-based Starlink ultrafast broadband service as a backup or for occasional roaming, which means that outside of those times their terminal kit (dish and router) will be left dormant (i.e. the service is paused or cancelled but can be reactivated). If you’re one of those, you need to reconnect it ASAP to avoid it being bricked.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today granted “temporary authorisation” for SpaceX’s Starlink service to harness the E band (71-76GHz and 81-86GHz) frequencies for their mega constellation of compact ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The move will boost their backhaul data capacity at three gateway earth station sites.

The Derbyshire County Council (DCC) in England has agreed to invest £900,000 to support the launch of two grant programmes, which will aim to improve broadband connectivity in at least some of the communities – predominantly rural ones – that are currently still expected to miss out on access to faster connections.

A recent study from New Street Research has predicted that the UK will lose around 250,000 subscribers to fixed broadband services this year, which would mark “the first time there has ever been a decline” in the market. Competition from Starlink (satellite), fixed wireless and mobile broadband rivals are said to be the main cause.

SpaceX’s global Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds across the UK and globally via a mega constellation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has provided their best view yet of what the company’s next generation v3 (GEN3) satellites will look like when deployed to orbit. Each one will have 10 times more capacity than earlier v2 satellites.

ISPreview has spotted that the Welsh Government (WG) have today issued a formal tender notice for their £70m (state aid) “Extending High Speed Broadband” (EHSB) project for Wales. In its current form, this aims to help extend faster broadband to around 29,000 premises in poorly served areas (i.e. locations that can’t yet access 30Mbps+ speeds).

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects broadband performance data from consumers via their popular Speedtest.net service, has examined the onboard WiFi performance of train services across Europe (inc. some Asian rail networks) and found that the United Kingdom delivers some of the slowest internet speeds on trains.

The UK Government has today launched a new Innovation Cluster Map, which forms part of a fresh drive to encourage pensions firms to commit more of their private investment toward the country’s science and technology sectors, which could include anything from research into new vaccines and medicines to AI or future satellite broadband technologies etc.
