SpaceX has announced that they will have to de-orbit (scrap) around a hundred of their older “early-version 1” Starlink ultrafast low-latency broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) because of a design flaw, which might otherwise cause the space platforms to fail in orbit and become non-manoeuvrable.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has proposed to grant an Earth Station Network Licence (ESNL) to NSLComm in support of its plans to launch a new global constellation of 264 satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which could be used to provide broadband to mobile sites (backhaul), as well as military, aviation, maritime and enterprises.

The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.6% (22.39 million) in Q3 2023 to total 1.42 billion connections, which compares with 1.87% (24.59m) in the same quarter last year. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK almost stalled in the latest quarter.

National telecoms giant BT (EE) has reportedly entered into talks that could eventually see them harnessing SpaceX’s global constellation of Starlink ultrafast low-latency broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which could be used to help improve both internet and mobile connectivity to remote areas.

Starlink (SpaceX) has conducted the first successful live test of their new global Direct to Cell mobile roaming service with regular unmodified Smartphones, which came only six days after they launched (here) the first small batch of DtC capable broadband satellites. But at present it’s only being used to send and receive text (SMS) messages.
