A few years ago we got the chance to test the performance of in-flight internet access on a long-haul British Airways flight from the UK to USA (here) – mostly conducted over water. We’ve now been able to run a similar test by going in the other direction, from the UK to Dubai (UAE), which mostly occurred over land.

Avanti, which is based in the UK and runs the HYLAS network of five large Ka-band communication satellites in high earth orbit (35,792km) for rural broadband and backhaul delivery across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has been given a reprieve by a new investment deal that slashes its debt from $810m to $260m (£198m).

Internet shopping giant Amazon has managed to secure up to 83 Launches aboard rockets from Arianespace, Blue Origin, and United Launch Alliance (ULA) to support their plans for a new global low-latency ultrafast broadband service via a new mega constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

SpaceX has added a coverage map to the website for their Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband ISP satellites, which makes it easier to see which parts of the United Kingdom and world can currently access the service. Anything north of around Aberdeen in Scotland is currently excluded.

Bad news folks, SpaceX has just hiked the price of everything from rocket launches to their already expensive Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband ISP satellites, the latter of which due to increase in price by 11.11% per month (20% for the hardware) in order to “keep pace with rising inflation.”

Rivada Space Networks has become the latest company to announce a plan to launch their own mega-constellation of 600 broadband satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which will serve the Telecom, Enterprise, Maritime, Energy and Government services markets. But they’re also “planning” to tackle poor connectivity in rural areas.

British-registered satellite company OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK Government, has today announced a global, multi-year Distribution Partnership Agreement (DPA) with Eutelsat to help commercialise the company’s broadband services for key sectors including Maritime, Aviation, Enterprise, Telcos and Government.

British-registered space company OneWeb has today announced a new agreement to “resume” launches of their ultrafast low-latency broadband satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by harnessing rockets (e.g. the Falcon9) from SpaceX, which is the owner and operator of arch rival Starlink. The first launch is expected this year.

A new provider called XtndNet claims to have launched a new ISP network for serving “forgotten broadband customers” in remote rural parts of the UK, which adopts a “hybrid” approach that combines mobile broadband (4G / 5G) with fixed line ADSL and satellite connectivity in order to offer “typical” download speeds of 25Mbps.

Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has today published their latest Q4 2021 report into the internet download, upload and latency speeds for UK customers on SpaceX’s new Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published their proposals for a new ‘Space Spectrum Strategy’, which among other things sets out their approach to supporting the growth of satellite broadband services, such as via the new mega constellations of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) platforms from SpaceX (Starlink) and OneWeb.

Calls are growing for the UK Government to take action to stop OneWeb, a British-registered company where it holds a key £400m stake after helping to rescue it from bankruptcy in 2020 (alongside a consortium of investors), from using Russian rockets for future launches of OneWeb’s ultrafast low-latency broadband satellites.

The Fastershire broadband project is starting to make a new Digital Household Grant (DHG) available to homes in some rural parts of South Herefordshire (i.e. those that were originally due to receive FTTP broadband via UK ISP Gigaclear), which will enable them to help cover the installation cost of an “interim broadband solution.”

SpaceX’s Starlink ISP, which provides ultrafast low latency broadband across the world and the UK via a mega constellation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has soft launched an expensive new PREMIUM tier that will give you speeds of up to 500Mbps for $500 per month (£369) and $2,500 for the kit (£1843).

The latest State of Rural Services report, which is being published today by Rural England CIC, has warned that many people in the country’s small towns and villages still face being “digitally excluded and locked out of key services” due to an “underinvestment in rural connectivity” (e.g. broadband and mobile infrastructure) and skills.
