Space firm OneWeb, which is owned by a consortium of the UK Government and working to build a new global mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has confirmed earlier speculation by announcing that the company will invest £2.2bn ($3bn) to shift manufacturing from the USA to UK.

The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) has warned that new Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites, such as from SpaceX’s Starlink and British-registered OneWeb, will have a “significant” impact on radio astronomers and could put at risk hundreds of millions of pounds of UK investment in space research.

Internet shopping giant Amazon has announced that they will launch two prototype Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites by Q4 2022, which will be used to test technologies for their new global ultrafast broadband service that is designed to compete with established constellations from SpaceX (Starlink) and OneWeb.

UK ISP BT and satellite operator OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK government, have today officially signed a Distribution Partner Agreement that could result in faster low-latency backhaul and broadband solutions for businesses. Further down the line, it may also help to cover rural homes by fuelling Fixed Wireless Access.

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 1.7% (20.66 million) in Q2 2021 to total 1.222 billion, but it also found that the quarterly growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) networks in the UK had fallen sharply to 14.8% in Q2 2021 after previously seeing consecutive increases.

OneWeb, which is part owned by the UK Government, has confirmed that their global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based broadband satellites is now compatible with the Kymeta u8 flat panel user terminal. A test in France was also able to achieve download speeds of over 200Mbps and uploads of 40Mbps “over repeated testing.”

The President of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell, has announced that the expensive terminal equipment (i.e. dish, mount and router), which ships to UK, USA and European customers who order an ultrafast broadband service via their Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, is to get significantly cheaper by the end of 2021.

Customer reports from across the world suggest that SpaceX’s new Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) ultrafast broadband satellites has suffered a major service outage today, which appears to have started just after 1pm UK time and is affected users in the USA and Europe (possibly more).
