World Record – Scientists Send 6Gbps of E Band Wireless Data Over 37km

24th May, 2016 (6 Comments)

A team of German scientists have successfully achieved a record data rate of 6Gbps (Gigabits per second) over a distance of 36.7 kilometres by harnessing part of the E band spectrum, which operates at a radio frequency of 71-76GHz (GigaHertz). The new development could be used to boost both terrestrial and Satellite broadband capacity links.

Researchers in Scotland Promise Self Healing 5G Mobile Networks

30th March, 2016 (0 Comments)

Future 5G based Mobile Broadband networks are expected to be extremely fast (peak speeds of up to 10Gbps), but new EU supported research taking place at the University of West of Scotland (UWS) could also make them “self-healing” to boost performance, protect against DDoS attacks and recover faster from outages.

10Gbps Capable 5G Mobile Broadband Could Arrive as Soon as 2017

23rd February, 2016 (5 Comments)

Most EU and UK telecoms regulators don’t expect the first commercial roll-out of future 5G capable Mobile Broadband services to happen until 2020 or later, but that hasn’t stopped Nokia and Verizon aiming for it to be launched far sooner.. in 2017! Field trials have already begun.

UK Scientists Squeeze 1.125Tbps Through a Single Fibre Optic Receiver

12th February, 2016 (3 Comments)

A team of researchers working out of the University College London have given fibre optic communications technology a further boost by achieving the highest data throughput ever reported (1.125 Terabits per second) for a single coherent optical receiver.

Japanese Scientists Push 100Gbps Wireless Broadband Using 300GHz

11th February, 2016 (4 Comments)

Last week we reported that Japanese scientists had managed to build a wireless network that could send data at a speed of 56Gbps (Gigabits per second) using the 72-100GHz (GigaHertz) radio frequency bands (here) and now another team claims it can hit 100Gbps by pushing into the TeraHertz (300GHz+).

Scientists in Japan Test 56Gbps Wireless Chip to Replace Fibre Optic Lines

3rd February, 2016 (1 Comment)

Japanese scientists have demonstrated (lab test) a new low power CMOS wireless transceiver chip that can deliver data speeds of 56Gbps (Gigabits per second), which could be used by mobile operators to replace expensive fibre optic cables to their base stations. But there’s a catch.. distance.

Li-Fi LED Light Network Delivers 1GBps Speeds in Commercial Pilot

25th November, 2015 (4 Comments)

It’s been a long time coming but the new Light Fidelity (LiFi) technology, which can turn LED (Light-Emitting Diode) based home and office lighting or display systems into a sophisticated wireless communications network like WiFi, has finally started to reach the commercial pilot phase.

BT and Alcatel-Lucent Hit 5600Mbps Broadband Using XG-FAST Tech

20th October, 2015 (61 Comments)

Forget BT’s plan to deploy “ultrafast” 300-500Mbps capable G.fast broadband technology to 10 million UK premises by 2020 (here). Today the operator has joined with Alcatel-Lucent to test future XG.FAST (G.fast2) technology, which under lab conditions has just pushed aggregate speeds of 5.6Gbps over 35 metres of copper cable.

First Large-Scale Field Trial of 5G Mobile Delivers Speed of 3.6Gbps

8th October, 2015 (2 Comments)

Chinese firm Huawei and Japanese telecoms giant NTT DOCOMO have conducted the world’s first large-scale field trial of next generation 5G mobile broadband technology using the sub-6GHz band, which has been able to achieve an impressive peak speed of 3.6Gbps (Gigabits per second).

“Danger Will Robinson” – Internet Capacity Crunch in 8 Years Time

21st September, 2015 (9 Comments)

Professor Andrew Ellis of Aston University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science has once again warned that the Internet “could be on the brink … of a capacity crunch“, which might force ISPs to throttle your broadband and it could happen within the next 8 years. Best get that tinfoil hat.

Scientists Have Broken One of the Biggest Limits in Fibre Optic Networks

28th June, 2015 (6 Comments)

One of the biggest limitations in ultrafast fibre optic communications is that even optical signals can weaken over long distances, which requires expensive electronic regenerators (repeaters) to be placed along the route to boost the signal. But what if you didn’t need those? Future networks could be both faster and cheaper.

Huawei Test 1Tbps Capacity Upgrade for Existing Fibre Optic Networks

26th June, 2015 (0 Comments)

Proximus and Huawei have trialled a new upgrade for existing core fibre optic networks that could help to upgrade current capacity from 200Gbps (Gigabits per second) to 400Gbps or even 1 Terabits per second, which would be used to meet the ever rising data demands of modern broadband consumers.

Future Spy Cameras Could Steal Power from Your Home WiFi Signals

8th June, 2015 (0 Comments)

Researchers working at the University of Washington appear to have become the first to harvest power using signals from home WiFi devices operating in the 2.4GHz radio spectrum band (note: an Asus RT-AC68U router was used for the demo), which allowed them to power several devices including a tiny camera.

Pro-Broadband Ofcom Begins Review of UK Satellite Radio Spectrum Use

4th June, 2015 (0 Comments)

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has today signalled the start of yet another strategic review, which this time will examine the radio spectrum use of space-based science and satellite communication services. Ofcom’s review could affect the future availability of frequencies for 5G and other broadband technologies.

Experts Fear UK Electricity and Fibre Optic Capacity Shortage to Hit Internet

3rd May, 2015 (12 Comments)

At least once every year, for the past decade or more, somebody somewhere has warned about an impending Internet “capacity crunch” or “crash” and today we have a new scare story. The crux of the problem is this, allegedly we’re going to run out of fibre optic capacity and electricity supplies might also struggle to keep pace with demand.
