Scientists Boost Home WiFi Signals via DIY 3D Printed Reflectors

13th November, 2017 (2 Comments)

A new study from a team of researchers working out of Dartmouth College, and the Universities of Washington, Irvine and Columbia in the USA, has demonstrated how it’s possible to easily build a low-cost 3D printed reflector that can be used to improve your home WiFi wireless network signals.

Twisted Light Wireless Optical Broadband Could Make Fibre Optics Obsolete

31st October, 2017 (5 Comments)

A team of scientists working in the Photonics Research Group at the University of Glasgow (Scotland) has made progress on a way to adapt twisted light across a wireless optical (laser) ultrafast broadband network, which they claim could make traditional fibre optic (FTTH/P) cables “obsolete.”

UPDATE Openreach Prep Second FTTC Broadband Spectrum Refarming Test

19th October, 2017 (8 Comments)

Openreach (BT) has announced that they are to conduct a second Proof of Concept (PoC) trial of “Spectrum Refarming” technology, which in theory could result in a boost to broadband speeds by allowing different technologies (e.g. FTTC / VDSL2 and G.fast) to share the same spectrum frequency.

UK Scientists Build 10Gbps Receiver to Boost Fibre Optic Broadband Lines

19th October, 2017 (0 Comments)

Scientists working out of the Optical Networks Group at University College London have developed a cheaper and simpler receiver for optical “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband networks, which makes it possible to dedicate a wavelength of light to each subscriber and “avoid bandwidth sharing.”

London Scientists Prep 10Gbps Home Wireless Network Using Li-Fi and 5G

14th September, 2017 (3 Comments)

A team working out of Brunel University London has secured £720,000 of funding from Europe’s Horizon 2020 programme in order to help them develop a 10Gbps capable home wireless network using hybrid Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) and mmWave tech inside LED (Light-Emitting Diode) room lights.

BT Spectrum Refarming Trial May Boost UK G.fast and FTTC Broadband Speed

10th May, 2017 (13 Comments)

A new Proof of Concept trial in Kent (England) is about to begin that could allow Openreach’s (BT) new ultrafast G.fast technology to share the same spectrum as existing FTTC (VDSL2) “fibre broadband” services, which in the future might help to boost speeds beyond 330Mbps.

UPDATE Forget 300Mbps G.fast, ASSIA Prep 1 Terabit DSL Copper Line Broadband

9th May, 2017 (9 Comments)

California-based ASSIA, which supplies broadband management systems to ISPs, has today announce that “extreme high frequency sub-millimeter waves” could in the future be used to push broadband speeds of up to 1Tbps (Terabit per second) down a single 100 metre twisted-pair copper line.

SpaceX Pledge 1Gbps Speed and 25ms Latency from its LEO Satellite Broadband

4th May, 2017 (9 Comments)

Rocket company SpaceX has released an update on their plans to launch a global constellation of 4,425 small Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites (a further 7,500 could follow) from 2019, which they claim will support ultrafast broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps and low latency times of just 25ms.

Eindhoven Scientists Prep 100 Times Faster WiFi via Infrared – 43Gbps Per Ray

21st March, 2017 (1 Comment)

Before Bluetooth came along it was quite normal for early portable devices (PDAs, Smartphones etc.) to communicate via a short line-of-sight link using Infrared light. Now scientists at the Eindhoven University of Technology have used a similar approach to deliver a “100 times faster” WiFi style network.

Verizon to Launch First 5G Fixed Wireless Broadband Trials in April 2017

22nd February, 2017 (1 Comment)

Verizon has today announced that in April 2017 they will become one of the first Mobile operators in the world to launch a real-world trial of future 5G technology. Initially this aims to deliver multi-Gigabit speeds via a fixed wireless broadband network to select customers in 11 markets across the USA.

TeraHertz Transmitter Delivers 105Gbps Wireless Speeds via Single Channel

7th February, 2017 (3 Comments)

A team of Japanese scientists have developed a TeraHertz (THz) transmitter that is capable of transmitting digital data at a rate of 105Gbps (Gigabits per second) over a single channel using the 300GHz band, which they claim could power a future generation of Mobile Broadband and Satellite links.

TeraHertz WiFi Moves Closer as Scientists Achieve Speeds of 34Gbps+

1st December, 2016 (3 Comments)

Researchers from Japan have managed to boost the speed of WiFi data transmissions to 34Gbps (Gigabits per second) by harnessing the 500GHz band of radio spectrum, which falls within the TeraHertz range (300GHz+). Even faster speeds are coming, but distance may be a problem.

BT and Toshiba Demo Secure UK Quantum Communications

13th October, 2016 (6 Comments)

Telecoms giant BT and Japanese electronics firm Toshiba have today teamed-up to demonstrate the future of secure data communication via quantum cryptography, which works by delivering secret keys over fibre optic cables via the “smallest possible packets of light.”

WiFi Needs 1280MHz of 5GHz Spectrum for “Whole Home” 1Gbps Speed

4th October, 2016 (0 Comments)

A recent study from Qualcomm Technologies has concluded that home WiFi (WLAN) wireless networks will need more than double the current amount of radio spectrum (around the 5GHz band) to deliver “sustained” speeds of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) throughout an entire home.

AT&T Labs Propose AirGig Wireless Powerline Broadband Technology

23rd September, 2016 (9 Comments)

The research and development division of global telecoms giant AT&T has begun to develop a new twist on the old Powerline Communications idea, but instead of sending electrical signals over the national grid’s power cables it would use the cables to “guide” a wireless broadband transmission.
