EU and South Korea Agree Joint 5G Mobile Broadband Development Deal

The next generation of 5G based Mobile Broadband services, which could deliver speeds of up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) or more, appeared to come a step closer today after Europe and South Korea signed a new deal that will see both working jointly towards a global definition of the new standard and to cooperate in research.

Birmingham-based Aston University in England has launched a new £1.5m international project called Petabit Energy Aware Capacity Enhancement (PEACE) that aims to “significantly improve bandwidth” and “reduce energy consumption” on our major fibre optic networks, which carry over 99% of all network and Internet data.

BT and Alcatel-Lucent Claim Fastest Real World Fibre Optic Speed of 1.4Tbps

Telecom giants Alcatel-Lucent and BT have today announced that a field trial of new Flexgrid technology has helped to deliver data speeds of up to 1.4Tbps (Terabits per second) over an existing “commercial grade” fibre optic link using a “record spectral efficiency” of 5.7 bits per second per Hertz (b/s/Hz).

Swiss scientists working out of EPFL, part of Switzerland’s Federal Institutes of Technology, have found another way to boost the performance of existing fibre optic networks by shortening the distance (space) between pulses of laser light. Better yet the solution is said to be “highly flexible and can be easily integrated” into existing communication systems.

A joint team of German researchers based out of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have achieved a world record after they successfully completed a 100Gbps (Gigabits per second) data transmission over a wireless radio network at 237.5GHz. The next target is 1Tbps!

The European Commission (EC) and Japan have announced the launch of six joint research projects, supported by £15.3m+ (€18m) in funding, that aim to build networks which are “5000 times faster than today’s average European broadband ISP speed (100Gbps compared to 19.7Mbps)“.

UK Researchers Working to End Internet Video Buffering on ISP Connections
