A joint team of German researchers based out of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have achieved a world record after they successfully completed a 100Gbps (Gigabits per second) data transmission over a wireless radio network at 237.5GHz. The next target is 1Tbps!

Global telecoms giant Alcatel-Lucent claims to have set a new world record after it successfully transmitted information (data) at the staggering speed of 31Tbps (Terabits per second) over a single long-haul 7200km optical fibre cable (i.e. simulating undersea transoceanic cable distances).

The European Commission (EC) and Japan have announced the launch of six joint research projects, supported by £15.3m+ (€18m) in funding, that aim to build networks which are “5000 times faster than today’s average European broadband ISP speed (100Gbps compared to 19.7Mbps)“.

Bell Labs, the New Jersey (USA) based research and development subsidiary of telecoms giant Alcatel-Lucent, has found a way of boosting data speeds down fibre optic cables by using two light beams in opposing phases to cancel out interference that would ordinarily slow the transfer.

Researchers working at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin (Germany) have taken their Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology, which makes it possible to use standard “off-the-shelf” LED (Light-Emitting Diode) room lights for data transmission, to the next level by boosting the speed up to 3Gbps (Gigabits per second).

27th March, 2013 (2 Comments)

Scientists working at the University of Southampton (England, UK) have found a way to push data at close to the true speed of light by using a special hollow fibre optic cable, which has been able to deliver transfer speeds of 73.7 Terabits per second.

Researchers at the University of Aberdeen (UA) in Scotland, supported by BT and Alcatel-Lucent, are seeking to “increase the speed of the Internet” by re-writing the way computers and network devices (e.g. routers) talk to each other so as to improve latency times (ping) and potentially make multiplayer games and video streaming smoother.

Network operator Telefónica and Infinera claim to have demonstrated the “first” super-channel fibre optic network running at a speed of 10Tbps (Terabits per second) via ten 1Tbps channels and a whole heap of both old and new modulation methods combined.

Austrian artist Peter Jellitsch has created a somewhat unique piece of art that delivers a physical interpretation of what the signal from a home wifi wireless network (WLAN) might look like if you could see it with your naked eye.

Researchers from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland (UK) have begun to develop a new Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) technology that could turn ordinary LED (Light-Emitting Diode) based home and office lighting or computer displays into a sophisticated wireless communications network like WiFi.

Fujitsu Laboratories claims to have developed a new software-only version of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) that has already achieved a “throughput increase of over 30 times” during simulated file transfers between Japan and the USA and it also improves latency (i.e. better ping times).

6th November, 2012 (6 Comments)

A team of scientists working out of Bangor University in Wales has developed a commercially affordable method of using Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OOFDM) over fibre optic lines, which could deliver broadband ISP speeds that are 2,000 times faster than current services.

A multi-national team of scientists working out of the University of Southern California (USC) have successfully tested a new networking technology that can “twist light” to send data at a staggering speed of up to 2.56Tbps (Terabits per second)! The solution could “potentially” be adapted for use in fibre optic cables or even satellite links.

A group of Japanese scientists working out of the Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) have managed to push wireless (wifi) data rates of between 2-3Gbps (Gigabits per second) over the unregulated T-rays band of the electromagnetic radio spectrum (300-3000GHz).

Scientists working at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and the University of Padova have experimentally demonstrated, in a real-world setting, that it is possible to simultaneously transmit multiple independent radio channels, on the same frequency, via the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band. Crucially the potential now exists to “dramatically increase the capacity of any frequency band,” which would have massive implications for other wireless solutions.
