PEACE – Aston University Project to Tackle Global Internet “capacity crunch”

3rd June, 2014 (2 Comments)

Birmingham-based Aston University in England has launched a new £1.5m international project called Petabit Energy Aware Capacity Enhancement (PEACE) that aims to “significantly improve bandwidth” and “reduce energy consumption” on our major fibre optic networks, which carry over 99% of all network and Internet data.

The Cloud Predict Wireless Device Charging from UK Public WiFi Hotspots

19th March, 2014 (0 Comments)

The Cloud, a public wireless Internet hotspot operator owned by BSkyB (Sky Broadband), has noted how similar technology to that already used in wifi networks could soon help everything from Smartphones to possibly even electric Cars get recharged while surfing the Internet and without needing to be plugged in.

11 Year MTHR Study Finds No Danger from Wireless Mobile Phone Radiation

12th February, 2014 (16 Comments)

People concerned that wireless radiation from mobile services operating in the electromagnetic spectrum (radio), such as those used for Mobile Phones and Mobile Broadband (e.g. 900MHz and 1800MHz), can rest a little easier today after an 11-year long and £13.6m UK study found “no evidence” of biological or adverse health effects.

Wireless Radiation Fears Nearly Scupper Broadband Mast in Scotland

6th February, 2014 (3 Comments)

Mention words like Microwave or Radiation and some people will instantly conjure up frightening images of nuclear disasters, three headed dogs and of course.. Justin Bieber. The latter is particularly horrifying but not when it nearly scuppers a seemingly harmless rural broadband project (the wireless aspect not Bieber).

BT and Alcatel-Lucent Claim Fastest Real World Fibre Optic Speed of 1.4Tbps

21st January, 2014 (41 Comments)

Telecom giants Alcatel-Lucent and BT have today announced that a field trial of new Flexgrid technology has helped to deliver data speeds of up to 1.4Tbps (Terabits per second) over an existing “commercial grade” fibre optic link using a “record spectral efficiency” of 5.7 bits per second per Hertz (b/s/Hz).

Rectangular Light Spectrum Pulses Promise 10x Faster Fibre Optic Networks

10th December, 2013 (0 Comments)

Swiss scientists working out of EPFL, part of Switzerland’s Federal Institutes of Technology, have found another way to boost the performance of existing fibre optic networks by shortening the distance (space) between pulses of laser light. Better yet the solution is said to be “highly flexible and can be easily integrated” into existing communication systems.

UK Scientists Push 10.5Gbps Over Micron Sized LED Light Bulb Network

29th October, 2013 (0 Comments)

A team of UK scientists working on the £4.6m Ultra-Parallel Visible Light Communications (UP-VLC) project have successfully enhanced Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) technology so that a micro-LED (Light-Emitting Diode) light bulb can now transmit data at a record speed of 10.5Gbps (Gigabits per second).

UPD Scientists Hit 100Gbps Wireless World Record to Aid Rural Broadband

15th October, 2013 (1 Comment)

A joint team of German researchers based out of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have achieved a world record after they successfully completed a 100Gbps (Gigabits per second) data transmission over a wireless radio network at 237.5GHz. The next target is 1Tbps!

Alcatel-Lucent Breaks Record with 31Tbps Over a Single Fibre Optic Cable

17th July, 2013 (0 Comments)

Global telecoms giant Alcatel-Lucent claims to have set a new world record after it successfully transmitted information (data) at the staggering speed of 31Tbps (Terabits per second) over a single long-haul 7200km optical fibre cable (i.e. simulating undersea transoceanic cable distances).

Europe and Japan Aiming to Build 100Gbps Fibre Optic Internet

4th July, 2013 (8 Comments)

The European Commission (EC) and Japan have announced the launch of six joint research projects, supported by £15.3m+ (€18m) in funding, that aim to build networks which are “5000 times faster than today’s average European broadband ISP speed (100Gbps compared to 19.7Mbps)“.

Bell Labs Boost Fibre Optic Speeds to 400Gbps Using Phase Conjugation

30th May, 2013 (0 Comments)

Bell Labs, the New Jersey (USA) based research and development subsidiary of telecoms giant Alcatel-Lucent, has found a way of boosting data speeds down fibre optic cables by using two light beams in opposing phases to cancel out interference that would ordinarily slow the transfer.

Scientists Deliver 3Gbps Capable High Speed Internet via LED Ceiling Lamps

6th April, 2013 (3 Comments)

Researchers working at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin (Germany) have taken their Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology, which makes it possible to use standard “off-the-shelf” LED (Light-Emitting Diode) room lights for data transmission, to the next level by boosting the speed up to 3Gbps (Gigabits per second).

Southampton UK Scientists Build 73.7Tbps Capable Hollow Fibre Optic Cable

27th March, 2013 (2 Comments)

Scientists working at the University of Southampton (England, UK) have found a way to push data at close to the true speed of light by using a special hollow fibre optic cable, which has been able to deliver transfer speeds of 73.7 Terabits per second.

UK Researchers Working to End Internet Video Buffering on ISP Connections

14th February, 2013 (1 Comment)

Researchers at the University of Aberdeen (UA) in Scotland, supported by BT and Alcatel-Lucent, are seeking to “increase the speed of the Internet” by re-writing the way computers and network devices (e.g. routers) talk to each other so as to improve latency times (ping) and potentially make multiplayer games and video streaming smoother.
