The Scottish Government has informed ISPreview.co.uk that LOT 1 of their £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which recently approved BT as the “preferred bidder” and aims to extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks to “as many premises as possible“, has become the subject of a legal challenge by Gigaclear.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has announced that the publicly funded Connected Communities (ConCom) wireless network, which since 2005 has been bringing slow broadband speeds of up to 4Mbps to the remote rural Outer Hebrides of Scotland, is set to close in March 2020.

The Scottish Government‘s £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) contract with BT (here and here), which originally aspired to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks available to “every single premises in Scotland” by the end of 2021 and is already running a year behind schedule, may allegedly not complete until late 2024.

A public investment of £50,000 by the Stirling Council in Scotland has enabled 72 homes and 30 businesses in the remote rural Trossachs community of Brig o’ Turk to access broadband speeds of 50Mbps+ via a new fixed wireless network, which harnesses TV White Space (TVWS) tech from UK ISP Broadway Broadband (Broadway Partners).

Last night the Scottish National Party (Pàrtaidh Nàiseanta na h-Alba) finally published details of their 2019 Manifesto for the 12th December UK General Election, which largely reiterates their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) “superfast broadband” rollout project and promises to continue campaigning for more funding from Westminster.

Residents in part of the large South Lanarkshire (Scotland) village of Drumsagard have complained, perhaps unfairly, after contractors working to extend UK ISP Virgin Media’s fibre broadband network – Keir Group – reportedly left the pavements looking like an “eyesore,” except it looks mostly fair to us.

The City of Edinburgh Council and Cityfibre have today reached a new wayleave (access) agreement, which means that the operator’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network will be extended to include around 19,000 social housing properties. The service is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone.

The Scottish Government‘s £25m 4G Infill Programme, which began in March 2018 and aims to improve rural mobile coverage (mostly across the Highlands and Islands region) by building a network of 45 new masts (here), has so far not built any new sites and only 3 are expected to begin construction in the “very near future.”

The Government’s Culture Secretary, Nicky Morgan MP, has revealed that Mobile Network Operators (Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE / BT) could face huge fines – worth up to 10% of their annual turnover – if they fail to meet their new 4G / 5G geographic UK coverage obligations by 2026.

KCOM’s £85m rollout of a new FTTP broadband ISP network in Hull, as well as Digital Scotland‘s £442m (public and private investment) work with Openreach (BT) to spread “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 940,000 extra Scottish premises, have today both been named as UK finalists for the 2019 European Broadband Awards.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has announced that their network extension in Inverclyde (Scotland) has now completed, which means that 4,800 extra homes and business can now access their soon-to-be 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network (currently 500Mbps+).

The Government has today announced a new £1bn deal with Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE (BT) to establish a new Shared Rural Network (SRN), which will see the mobile operators working cooperatively together in order to extend the geographic coverage of 4G (mobile broadband) services to 95% of the UK by 2025.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has announced that a reinvestment of £3m from BT will soon enable Openreach to build more “ultrafast broadband” capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP networks across the rural region of Scotland, although it’s unclear how many extra premises will benefit.

Axione UK, which is a subsidiary of French communications provider Axione S.A.S, has revealed that they’re planning to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based Gigabit-capable broadband network in the United Kingdom, which would be made available for other ISPs to harness via wholesale. All eyes on Scotland.

Full fibre and broadband ISP network builder Cityfibre has decided that the debate over moving from old copper lines to new “full fibre” (FTTP) ones shouldn’t just be focused upon Openreach (BT). As a result the operator has proposed to conduct an industry-wide consultation to examine how alternative network providers can help.

Fixed Wireless Access ISP Lothian Broadband, which covers remote rural parts of East Lothian and Mid Lothian in Scotland, has announced that their fledgling roll-out of an ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the East Lothian village of Gifford is being extended to reach many more homes and businesses.
