Top European and UK Vacation Cities for Mobile Broadband Speed

A recent study by Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service for benchmarking global internet connection performance, has revealed which of the top big “vacation” cities and towns in the UK and Europe deliver the fastest mobile broadband speeds (4G and 5G). London comes mid-table with a median download of 69.02Mbps.

The organisation divided the towns and cities into four categories that might appeal to different types of travellers: big cities, beach life, cultural havens, and forest getaways. The UK only appears in the “big cities” (London) and “cultural havens” (Bristol and Edinburgh) tables.

In terms of the “big cities“, Oslo in Norway topped the list of 15 European vacation destinations full of big city excitement with the fastest mobile internet speeds of 156.99Mbps during Q2 2022 (no surprise given the maturity of FTTP coverage in that region). By comparison, Istanbul in Turkey (36.73Mbps) and Rome in Italy (37.33Mbps) were found to be the slowest.

As for the claimed “cultural havens“, travellers looking for plenty of culture and fast mobile internet speeds can apparently do no better than Tromsø in Norway, which had a median download speed 251.52Mbps. By comparison, the slowest locations were Yerevan in Armenia (24.11Mbps) and Florence in Italy (29.84Mbps).

The UK had two entries in this table, which saw Bristol (England) place in the top three with a speed of 83.30Mbps, while Edinburgh (Scotland) sat fifth from the bottom on a score of 51.07Mbps.

It’s not bad at all when “the worse” is 25 Mbps, I’d say 🙂

Worth remembering that this appears to be a ‘top’ style list from Ookla, rather than a complete or total list. So those are the worst of the top lists, but it could still be much worse than that. We’d need a bottom list to see.
