36,000 North Lanarkshire Council Tenants to Get Gigabit Broadband UPDATE

The North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) in Scotland has announced that they intend to roll-out “ultrafast broadband” connectivity across “all social housing” within the local authority (council documents suggest the goal is for speeds of 1Gbps), which is aimed at closing the authority’s digital divide, while improving access to knowledge, skills and jobs.

Top 15 Fastest and Slowest UK Local Authorities for Mobile Broadband in 2025

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net service, has this morning published a new analysis of mobile 4G and 5G network data performance across UK local authorities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK-wide median mobile download speed rose 15% to 63.03Mbps in 2025, but big gaps remain.

Broadband ISP GoFibre Opens Up GoFurther Fund to Scottish Borders

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network GoFibre, which is building a gigabit broadband (FTTP) network across remote rural parts of Scotland and Northern England, has allocated a further pot of £12,000 to their GoFurther community fund for projects and organisations in the Scottish Borders area.

Government Launch 80 Free Local Digital Skills Training Schemes Across UK

The Government has today complemented their Digital Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) by launching 80 local schemes across the UK, which will offer free digital skills training and other support to help some of the most vulnerable in communities get online with confidence (i.e. disadvantaged young people to elderly people and the homeless etc.).

ITS Technology Expand UK Full Fibre Network to Glasgow and Newcastle

Study Finds Benefits from Scotland’s R100 Gigabit Broadband Rollout

The Scottish Government (SG) have published an interim evaluation report for their ongoing £697m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach, which has so far helped to deploy full fibre (FTTP) broadband to 93,800 extra premises in remote rural areas. The report finds benefits in terms of “business productivity, enhanced personal wellbeing and strengthened resilience for households and communities“.

Nov 2025 Contract Delivery Progress for UK Project Gigabit Broadband Rollout

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has today published their November 2025 update on the delivery progress of contracts that have been awarded under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which among other things reveals that some 167,770 contracted premises (up from 150.7k in Oct 2025) have been covered out of a planned total of 1,002,210.

Ofcom – Gigabit Broadband Covers 87 Percent of UK as 5G Hits 97 Percent

Ofcom has today released their Connection Nations 2025 digital infrastructure report earlier than usual, which reveals that residential gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks now cover 87% of the UK (up from 84% in 2024), while outdoor 5G coverage from at least one mobile operator is available to 97% of premises (up from 95%). But rural cover remains weaker.

Openreach Update on Progress of Project Gigabit Builds in Scotland

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has issued a progress update on their deployment of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across rural parts of Scotland. This forms part of their £157m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit contract (here) with the UK government to upgrade 65,000 premises (albeit managed by the Scottish Government).

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has today published the latest Q2 – Q3 2025 progress report on their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme. The data reveals that some 1.3 million premises have now received coverage from BDUK’s gigabit programmes since their inception, albeit only 131,090 via Project Gigabit’s contracts.

Good news for residents and businesses on the tiny, remote Inner Hebrides Island of Tiree, which suffered a break in its only subsea fibre cable after Storm Amy struck Scotland at the start of October – resulting in disruption to local broadband and phone services (here). Cable repairs are finally about to get underway.

Ofcom Predict 97 Percent of UK Covered by Gigabit Broadband in Jan 2028

Somehow, we overlooked that the telecoms regulator had published the fourth edition of their forecast for Planned Network Deployments, which has revised down its expectations of future coverage after UK broadband operators did the same. The report now predicts that full fibre (FTTP) lines will reach 86-95% of homes by January 2028 – rising to 91-97% for gigabit-capable networks (i.e. FTTP and Cable).

R100 Gigabit Broadband Rollout Reaches 93,800 Premises in Scotland

The Scottish Government (SG) recently revealed that 93,800 premises have now benefitted from their £697m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (up from 83,419 in July 2025), which is rolling out full fibre (FTTP) broadband to remote rural areas. But the full roll-out is still not expected to complete until early 2028.

October 2025 Progress Update on BT 10Mbps UK Broadband USO

ISP BT has published the biannual (October 2025) progress update on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat unpopular 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,553 premises (up from 8,411 in April 2025), with 186 further builds in-progress (down from 349).

Bad Weather Delays Fix for Broken Shetland Subsea Fibre Cable Until Tuesday UPDATE

Bad weather means customers of broadband and mobile providers Vodafone, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk on Shetland, which is a remote UK subarctic archipelago that resides north of the Scottish mainland, will have to wait until Tuesday until repair ship Cable Vigilance can complete its fix of the recently broken SHEFA-2 (Faroese Telecom) subsea cable.

Scottish Government Upgrades Broadband Coverage Checker UPDATE

The Scottish Government put out a brief notice this week to say that their “upgraded address checker … is now live” for broadband coverage, which apparently “now includes more detailed info on access and our delivery programmes“, albeit seemingly without providing any further specifics to better explain what’s changed.
