Audit Scotland Map R100 Contract LOTs

The Scottish Government (SG) has today revealed that more than 80,000 premises have now benefitted from their £697m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which is rolling out full fibre (FTTP) broadband to remote rural areas. Some 27,000 premises of this have been delivered over the past year, which is up from 20,000 the year before.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that – over the past 12-months – they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G mobile services across “over” 3,000 postcodes in the city of Glasgow (Scotland), which should bring “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability to the area.

The Scottish Government (SG) looks as if they could be preparing to “relaunch” their proposed gigabit broadband roll-out procurement for Fife, Perth and Kinross during September 2025. This might take a second stab at trying to find a supplier that can help upgrade the remaining set of hardest-to-reach premises.

Network operator VodafoneThree UK has today announced that they’ve begun a “feasibility study” to explore the possibility and cost of deploying a new subsea fibre optic cable system to help transform broadband and mobile connectivity in the Shetland Islands – a remote subarctic archipelago that resides some way north of Scotland.

Network operator Fibre 1 Limited, which typically focuses more on Scotland and offers a range of broadband / Ethernet / internet connectivity services to businesses, recently ran into a problem after a disputed invoice briefly led to a court action to appoint a provisional liquidator. But this issue was promptly reversed and settled.

The Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) has announced that they’ve appointed network analyst firm Streetwave to harness fleets of bin lorries to help “accurately” map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage and performance, which will focus on the North of Scotland (i.e. Moray, Aberdeenshire and Highland Council areas).

ISPreview has uncovered that the Scottish Government (SG) have stopped their tender for a supplier to deliver on the proposed £43m (state aid) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme in Fife, Perth and Kinross (Lot 4 – Scotland). This had been expected to help expand full fibre (FTTP) connectivity to an estimated 28,441 premises in hard-to-reach rural areas.

Edinburgh-based UK ISP GoFibre has revealed that their roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the County Durham market town of Barnard Castle, which forms part of their £6.6m state-aid supported Project Gigabit contract to cover 4,000 hard-to-reach premises in rural Teesdale (here), has now connected over 500 customers.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has this morning revealed that a total of 50 government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across England (9 masts), Wales (28) and Scotland (13) as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. But 50 more will follow by March 2026.

Mobile network operator Three UK has today completed their trial of OpenRAN (O-RAN) technology in the city of Glasgow (Scotland). The test, which marks one of the UK’s first deployments of the technology in a dense urban environment, delivered “impressive results” with both 4G and 5G data speeds doubled at peak times.

The Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Eastwood, Jackson Carlaw, has warned of “serious uncertainty” over the ability of some areas in the City of Glasgow, which have been held up for years by the owners of private roads, to be connected to CityFibre’s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) UK broadband ISP network.

A new report has revealed how much Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband coverage exists across the top 15 National Parks in England, Scotland and Wales. Overall the top performing park was found to be the Yorkshire Dales (57.05%), while on the flip side Loch Lomond and The Trossachs (28.23%) delivered the weakest coverage.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has this morning announced that they’ve connected, as part of their state aid funded contracts via the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit scheme, the first remote rural premises in 38 different locations across the UK to their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

Scottish train operator ScotRail has today announced that they’ve launched a new 6-month trial alongside communications provider Clarus Networks, which will extend their Starlink (satellite) based broadband upgrade of onboard WiFi – this is to include six class 158 trains that travel along their Highlands routes in Scotland.

Ofcom has today published its Spring 2025 update on UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) lines now reach 74% of homes (up from 69% in July 2024), while 86% are within reach of a gigabit network (up from 83%) and 62-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal (up from 61-79%).
