The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has commissioned consultancy firm ekosgen to conduct a review of their Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) initiative, which has been running for five years and provides public investment to help setup new broadband networks in very remote rural areas.

The latest H1 2017 report from RootMetrics has revealed the 4G mobile performance and availability of O2, Three UK, Vodafone and EE across England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland. Overall EE takes the crown for Mobile Broadband speed and coverage, while Three UK won for reliability and calls.

The Scottish Government (SNP) has launched a new consultation on plans to “raise standards and improve the quality of road works” in Scotland, which should be of interest to any major broadband infrastructure builders in the country (e.g. Cityfibre, BT and Virgin Media) as it could affect their work.

The North Skye Broadband (NSB) project, which had been planning to deploy a B4RN-like fibre optic broadband network to 2,000 rural premises on the Northern side of the Isle of Skye in Scotland, has given up its application for significant state aid support after facing repeated delays.

Some 9,000 homes around new build sites at Rosewell, Midlothian, Johnstone, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Lossiemouth, Edinburgh, East Calder, East Kilbride, Bonnyrigg, Inverness, Kintore and Chapelton are next in line to get Openreach’s (BT) ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband service.

Building a major new ultrafast broadband network isn’t easy and sometimes contractors don’t do the work properly. The latest example of this stems from Virgin Media’s street works in South Ayrshire, some of which have been described by local councillors as “horrendous.”

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of a new survey that reveals the fastest and slowest local authorities across the United Kingdom by broadband download speed (median). The Orkney Islands (6.3Mbps) are by far the slowest and Tamworth is the fastest (30.4Mbps).

Homes on the remote and small Outer Hebrides island of Scalpay in Scotland (Highlands and Islands) can now access broadband download speeds of up to 80Mbps after Openreach (BT) deployed their hybrid Microwave (radio) and VDSL2 based Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) technology.

The Scottish Government has today claimed that their £428m Digital Scotland project with BT (Openreach) has successfully ensured that 750,000 extra Scottish homes and businesses can access a “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) service, with “superfast” speeds covering “more than” 90% of the country.

Openreach (BT) is funding a new trial in Scotland that involves the deployment of a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network to the tiny remote rural Caithness and Sutherland communities of Altnaharra (45 premises) and Skerray by Bettyhill (100 premises).
