The European Commission (EC) has kicked off their third annual ‘European Broadband Awards‘ event, which means they’re on the hunt for a short-list of any innovative projects that are helping to provide citizens with access to high-speed broadband internet.

The Board of the Cairngorms National Park Authority has proposed a 5 year plan for the remote rural region of Scotland, which includes a commitment to support the Cairngorms Community Broadband initiative that aims to bring 30Mbps+ broadband to 1,300 isolated premises.

The Bank of Scotland’s (Halifax, Lloyds) 2017 Rural Quality of Life Survey, which weighs a combination of broadband speeds, health, crime rate, weather, employment, happiness and skills etc. to determine the best rural places in the UK to live, has ranked Scotland’s Orkney Islands at the top.

The Scottish Government has today published a new Digital Strategy, which among other things confirms their plan to make 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” available to 100% of premises by 2021 via an “outside-in” approach (prioritising public investment for the hardest to reach rural areas).

Cityfibre has suspended one of their civil works contractors, KNNS, in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland). The action occurred after a dashcam video emerged that showed one of their fibre optic engineers sitting exposed in a manhole on a busy 30MPH street, with only two small traffic cones for protection.

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed that 10,000 premises in Scotland’s Midlothian council area will gain access to their TV and 300Mbps capable broadband network before the end of 2018, which forms part of the operator’s wider expansion to another 360,000 premises across the country.
