Some customers of Sky Broadband reported that they were unable to access the main NHS website and app earlier in the week, seemingly after the internet provider accidentally managed to block it. But Sky has since suggested that the fault might have been with the NHS. The issue prevented people being able to access their medical data and manage appointments etc.

The Stop Killing Games group, which is a consumer campaign that seeks to preserve video games after they are taken offline, has joined with a number of global rights respecting organisations to create a sister campaign called Stop Killing the Internet. The aim is to defend the open internet against policies and practices that “impose surveillance, exclusion and excessive centralised control” in the name of online safety.

The UK telecoms and internet content regulator, Ofcom, has published a revised guidance document on network resilience, which was first published in 2024 (here) to give broadband, mobile and other digital network providers greater clarity on how they can “reduce the risk of network outages“. The new update clarifies their stance on power backup for mobile cell / mast sites.

The Prime Minister of the UK Government, Sir Keir Starmer, has today confirmed that they will introduce an internet Social Media Ban for children under the age of 16 against ten popular platforms (TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, X, Threads, Facebook and Kick). But that’s not the only restriction they’ll be introducing.

A new YouGov survey of 16,474 people from across 14 European countries, including the United Kingdom, has very unsurprisingly found that only 10% of respondents expressed mistrust towards European router manufacturers. The figure rises to 38% for manufacturers from the USA, 52% for China and 67% for Russia. But many don’t know where their broadband router is built.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has closed the own-initiative compliance programme that it opened in October 2025 (here) for assessing whether regulated UK phone providers were meeting their obligations concerning the need to ensure access to emergency calls (e.g. 999 and 112). The good news is they found no major issues, but they have still proposed a few changes.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT has today announced that they’ve “become the first UK company” join Anthropic’s Project Glasswing, which will allow them controlled access to the frontier AI model – Claude Mythos Preview – in order to help strengthen cybersecurity for its networks and customers against the latest AI threats.

The UK Government (DSIT) has today published its response to a planned revision of the Telecommunications Security Code of Practice (2022), which will update the code to reflect changes in what sort of specific security measures public telecoms providers (broadband, mobile etc.) must take in order to protect their networks from attack.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT / DCMS) has today proposed “tougher fines and prison sentences” for those who damage subsea infrastructure essential for UK broadband access and trade, with consultation planned to take place later this year.

A sizeable group of Linux-powered broadband ISP routers, widely used both around the world and across the United Kingdom, will need firmware updates after a string of six new security vulnerabilities were recently discovered in the open-source networking tool Dnsmasq. But most of them would require local network access to fully exploit.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has this morning announced that their internet security feature – Secure Net Home, and smart router technology, Who’s Home, which were previously only available on their premium Pro 3 fixed broadband packages, has been extended to 900,000 customers on their standard broadband packages too.

The High Court has granted rights holders, such as Columbia Pictures and others, more flexibility to require the UK’s major broadband ISPs (e.g. BT, EE, Plusnet, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk) to block customers from accessing websites that have been found to facilitate internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Network operator Openreach (BT) and existing charity partner Crimestoppers have today announced that they’ve joined forces with a global leader in metal recycling, EMR, to help combat the rising tide of copper telecoms cable theft on their national broadband and phone network. Total Metal Theft is said to have costed the UK economy £4.3bn in the past decade.

Communications and broadband provider BT Business has today launched a new suite of “industrial-grade” cybersecurity tools to help the UK’s small and medium-sized enterprises tackle cyber criminals. The ISP will also provide a new Cyber Support Hub to help SMEs stay safe online, including free access to their “cyber advisors“.

Google and Apple recently began bringing cross-platform end-to-end encryption to Rich Communication Services (RCS), which is a data-only messaging service that’s intended to replace traditional SMS text messaging (you need a mobile internet / broadband connection for it to work). But it’s not yet fully available from all UK mobile operators.
