Virgin Media O2 Locking Some UK Accounts for Unclear Security Reasons

In recent months we’ve noticed what looks to be a rise in the number of O2 (Virgin Media) Mobile customers reporting that access to their account IDs have been “locked” due to unclear “security reasons“, which has in some cases taken several weeks or months for customers to get resolved. In other cases the issue may reoccur shortly after being resolved.

Ofcom Prep New UK Telecoms Security Reporting Rules for Mobile Networks

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed changes to “improve the consistency of security compromise incident reporting” (i.e. when broadband or mobile networks are disrupted by cyberattacks). The changes will, for example, change how outages are reported for mobile networks in rural areas, which recognises that outages in urban and rural areas affect users differently.

Tech and Civil Society Groups Warn Against Blanket UK Internet Restrictions

The Open Rights Group, Index on Censorship, Mozilla, Tor Project, Big Brother Watch, plus many other technology and civil society groups, have signed a new statement that urges UK policymakers to reconsider their approach to online safety legislation – warning that proposed age-gating measures and access restrictions threaten to fragment the open internet and erode the rights of all users.

Three Copper Broadband Cable Thieves in Birmingham Jailed for 3 Years

At the start of 2026 we reported on how West Midlands Police had arrested a gang of three men who were in the process of trying to steal Openreach’s (BT) copper UK broadband and phone cables – worth £50k – from an underground site in central Birmingham (here). Yesterday the Birmingham Crown Court jailed each one for 3 years.

EE UK Launch Upgraded AI Scam Guard Service to Protect Mobile Users

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched an upgraded version of their existing ‘Scam Guard‘ add-on, which is a network-level security defence that was first launched in July 2024 and has already stopped 169 million scam and spam attempts (here). The hope is that the upgraded add-on will “prevent at least twice as many scams” over the next 12-months.

Gov Intend to Restrict Social Media for Under 16s Even Without Full UK Ban

The government’s Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has revealed that – regardless of the outcome from their current consultation on a proposed internet Social Media ban for children under the age of 16 (here) – they will still “impose some form of age or functionality restrictions” even if they stop short of a full ban.

Two Men in Northern Ireland Charged Over 5G Mobile Mast Attacks

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have charged two men – one aged 45 and the other aged 46 – with committing a series of arson attacks on 5G mobile network masts, occurring predominantly in the west Belfast area between 2023 and 2025.

Ofcom Asks UK Telecoms Providers to Assess Security Risks of Frontier AI

The Scourge of Malware Infected Customer Devices at Big UK Broadband ISPs

A quick look at the global Threat Map from internet security giant Spamhaus can sometimes be quite illuminating. The map displays the activity of botnets around the world, fuelled by malware infected devices, and these days it’s not uncommon to see the likes of Sky (Sky Broadband), Virgin Media and BT popping up in the top ten table (i.e. ISPs with the most infected connections).
