Confusion as Defence Minister Calls for Ban of End-to-End Encryption

Brace for political double-speak. The Minister for Defence, Earl Howe, has reignited concerns that the Government’s controversial Investigatory Powers Bill could force UK ISPs and Internet content providers to weaken end-to-end encryption services by saying they may have to “develop and maintain a technical capability to remove encryption.”

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has had to clean up part of their website after somebody gained unauthorised access to their Content Management System (CMS) and began replacing the provider’s articles with spam promotions for random products, such as mugs, jerseys and shoes.

Sky Broadband has today followed up last year’s promise (here) by becoming the first major ISP in the United Kingdom enable network-level filtering by default for all new subscribers when they sign-up (i.e. Parental Controls that block access to “adult” websites).

Norton – Only 42% of People Can Tell if a Wi-Fi Network is Secure or Not

Can you honestly tell if a public WiFi network is secure or not? It may be better to assume that none of them are. A new survey from Internet security giant Norton (Symantec) has revealed that 61% of consumers believe their personal information is safe when using such a network.

Entanet Warn “not clear or workable” UK Internet Spying Bill Will Pass

Shropshire-based broadband and telecoms provider Entanet has warned that the Government’s controversial Investigatory Powers Bill (IPB), which will force ISPs to snoop on their customers, is “not clear or workable” but still “looks certain to become law within weeks.”

Scam Alert – UK Broadband ISP Users Targeted by Fake Support Pop-ups

Customers of BT, TalkTalk, PlusNet and Sky Broadband in the United Kingdom (others may also be affected) are all being warned to keep an eye out for fake pop-up support messages that claim to come from your ISP (phishing), which due to a simple exploit can appear on even legitimate websites.

Inquiry Threatens to Fine ISPs and Companies for Internet Security Fails

A cross-party Culture, Media and Sport Committee has published the outcome from an inquiry into Internet (cyber) security, which was setup following last year’s TalkTalk hack. The report recommends a series of changes, including jail terms for “data abusers” and fines for those who “fail to report, prepare for or learn from data breaches“.

Ubiquiti Based Wireless Broadband Networks Being Hit by Malware

Ubiquiti Networks has confirmed that some of their kit, which is used by wireless ISPs around the world (e.g. Vispa in the UK), is being attacked by a nasty piece of self-replicating malware that infects their Linux-based AirOS firmware (used on their routers, access points and other kit).
