Is it or isn’t it still alive? The State Opening of Parliament took place this morning and everybody was watching to, among other things, see if the UK government’s hugely controversial internet snooping legislation (Communications Data Bill) was still alive. The result.. confusion.

The UK coalition government’s Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg (Liberal Democrat), has this morning put the cat amongst the pigeons after he told London’s LBC 97.3 radio station that the controversial internet snooping bill “isn’t going to happen“.

40% of UK Adults Say ISPs are Responsible for Protecting their Personal Info

A new study conducted by Experian Consumer Services, which surveyed 2,249 internet using UK adults, has found that 40% believe the main responsibility for protecting identity and personal information online rests with service providers (broadband ISPs, mobile operators, banks etc.) and not themselves.

UK Privacy Groups Attack ISP Silence Over Internet Snooping Talks

The Open Rights Group, Privacy International and Big Brother Watch have today attacked some of the United Kingdom’s best known ISPs for betraying their customers by engaging “in a conspiracy of silence with the Home Office” over controversial proposals to expand the country’s existing internet snooping law (Communications Data Bill).

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) has criticised ISPs in the UK and Europe for failing to implement measures that could have helped to tackle one of the biggest Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks ever seen, which hit anti-spam group Spamhaus in March 2013 and impacted global internet traffic.

A new report from researchers at the University of Twente in the Netherlands has revealed that just 20 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) out of over 42,000 are responsible for nearly half of all the internet addresses that send SPAM (e.g. junk marketing email) and similar malicious content (viruses, phishing etc.).

The Joint Committee responsible for conducting pre-legislative scrutiny of the UK government’s Draft Communications Data Bill, which threatens to expand internet snooping laws by forcing ISPs into logging a bigger and more accessible slice of your online activity, has today described the proposed new laws as “overkill” and called for it to be “significantly amended“.
