Customers of Sky’s UK TV service can now get subscription-based video streaming service Hayu free for 3 months, included with their Sky package. The limited-time offer is provided by Sky VIP to celebrate the launch of Hayu on Sky Q, following on from the earlier launches of Hayu on Sky Stream and Sky Glass.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of their latest 2024 ranking of home broadband providers, which found that smaller ISPs like CommunityFibre, Zen Internet and Hyperoptic topped the table and eclipsed the biggest providers that now mostly inhabit the bottom half of the table.

Customers of Sky Broadband’s old G.fast based “Ultrafast” broadband packages on Openreach’s UK network, specifically those looking to upgrade to one of the provider’s latest full fibre (FTTP) based packages, are still struggling to do so – after several years – due to the ongoing lack of a smooth upgrade path.

The industry-led One Touch Switching Company (TOTSCo), which is responsible for implementing Ofcom’s solution for faster consumer switching between UK broadband ISPs on different networks (aka – One Touch Switch), has announced that the now heavily delayed system will aim to go live on 12th September 2024.

The government has announced that seven UK broadband and phone operators, including Openreach, CityFibre, AllPoints Fibre, CommunityFibre, Ogi, KCOM and WightFibre, have today signed a charter that commits them to protect “vulnerable customers” (e.g. those with telecare devices) when upgrading phone lines to a new digital (IP) based network.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has written a new letter that singles out big ISPs, including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media (VMO2), for being too slow to implement their One Touch Switch (OTS) system, which aims to make it quicker and easier for consumers to switch providers on different networks.

European benchmarking firm nPerf has just published the results from their annual 2024 crowdsourced study into UK fixed broadband ISP performance, which finds that subscribers of Virgin Media, Fibrus and Vodafone enjoyed the best internet connection performances over the past year.

Customers of Sky UK’s sibling NOW Broadband ISP sub-brand, which is perhaps better known for its associated NOW TV streaming service, may be pleased to know that the provider has finally launched a full fibre (FTTP) package on Openreach’s network. But there’s only one option and to get it you’ll be re-directed to Sky Broadband.

Customers of Sky UK’s (Sky Broadband, Comcast etc.) internet, phone and Pay TV products have today been told to brace for an average annual price hike of 6.7% (down from 8.1% last year), which is planned to be introduced from 1st April 2024. But this is mercifully lower than the rises of almost 8% (here) being introduced by their main competitors.

Uswitch.com has today revealed the winners of their annual 2024 Telecoms Awards event, which among things saw UK ISP Plusnet being named as the best ‘Broadband Provider of the Year’, while CommunityFibre won the best alternative network and Tesco Mobile scooped the win for best mobile ‘Network of the Year’.

Sky UK (Sky TV, Sky Broadband, Sky Mobile etc.), which is part of Comcast, has today notified staff that as many as 1,000 jobs could be cut this year as the company increasingly shifts its focus toward their internet-based (IP) TV solutions – Sky Glass and Sky Stream. Satellite TV installers are known to be one of the impacted groups.

Ofcom has published their latest study of UK consumer complaints for Q3 2023, which names Virgin Media as the worst for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband, landline phone and pay TV services. Meanwhile, O2, which is part of the same company, attracted the most complaints for Pay Monthly Mobile services.

The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) has today published their first biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index for January 2024, which reveals that three telecoms providers made it into their table of the country’s top 50 organisations, including Tesco Mobile (5th), Giffgaff (23rd) and Sky Mobile (42nd). The odd broadband ISP also gets a nod.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has today discounted their top 900Mbps Gigafast broadband package, which is sold over Openreach’s national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (available to 12.5 million premises), to just £42 per month on an 18-month minimum contract term (£63 thereafter).

The UK government has this morning announced the signing of a new charter with major broadband ISPs and landline phone providers, including Sky Broadband, BT, Virgin Media (O2) and TalkTalk, which sets out “new measures” to protect vulnerable customers when upgrading phone lines to a new digital (IP / VoIP based) network.
