The Director of Strategy and Policy at urban fibre optic developer CityFibre, Mark Collins, has today revealed more to ISPreview.co.uk about their Joint Venture plans with Sky Broadband and TalkTalk to roll-out an “ultra-fast” 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) broadband network for UK homes in three cities, starting with York.

Customers who have been migrated from BE Broadband to Sky Broadband’s network, specifically those who had taken the extra BE Webhosting service, have been told that their old email addresses (@bethere.co.uk) and webspace will cease to function on 31st July 2014.

Over the past couple of years most of the big broadband ISPs have introduced new routers with modern features, such as support for the latest Gigabit capable 802.11ac WiFi standard, Gigabit LAN ports, IPv6, USB ports, 5GHz wifi and so forth (note: there’s some variance on these between ISPs). But not all have been as fast to keep pace.

The seemingly endless merry-go-round of special offers has continued this week with Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media all adding a range of new vouchers and gift credits, with some worth as much as £100, to attract new subscribers.

The Information Commissioner’s Office has warned mobile operator EE that consumers have become tired of their nuisance sales calls and marketing texts, so much so that the regulator has even expressed concern about their “compliance with the law“. Customers on BT and Sky Broadband’s network experienced a 2 hour loss of both Internet and phone connectivity mid-yesterday morning after an unspecified fault triggered a “multiple exchange outage” that impacted services across parts of South Wales.

Sky Broadband warns that a “possible safety issue” has been identified with some of the Power Adaptors that were included with their small On Demand Connector for TV set-top-boxes and the Sky Wireless Booster product, many of which have been given away for free to existing broadband and TV subscribers.

BSkyB (Sky Broadband) has confirmed last week’s report that it has an interest in merging with Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland, which are all broadly owned and controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox (although Murdoch’s stake in BSkyB is just over 39%). But no agreement has “ever been reached“.

A new report claims that the United Kingdom’s four largest home broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, Sky Broadband and Virgin Media) are expected to imminently agree a controversial new Voluntary Copyright Alert Programme of Internet piracy warning letters with the Motion Picture Association and British Phonographic Industry.

Customers who pay £4.99 per month for the Entertainment Pass on Sky’s broadband-based NOW TV video streaming service, which includes live access to ten major channels like Sky One and Sky Atlantic, are about to be hit by a 40% price hike. The Sky Movies Pass will also suffer an increase.

BSkyB (Sky Broadband) has today published the latest results for Q1-2014, which reveals that their broadband ISP platform has seen a sharp drop in growth after adding +70,000 customers in the quarter to total 5,197,000 (down from +110k in Q4 2013 and +111k in Q3 2013). But is this the shadow of free BTSport content or just a temporary blip.

A series of complaints by Sky (Sky Broadband) has caused the Advertising Standards Authority to ban a direct mailing promotion for Virgin Media’s broadband, TV and phone bundles, which omitted material information regarding the differences between the two services and failed to make adequately clear the basis of a £214.95 savings claim.

Customers aren’t likely to notice much of a difference but the headline (advertised) download speed of Sky Broadband’s standard unlimited Internet access product has just been raised again from “up to” 16Mbps to 17Mbps, even though it’s still the same old ADSL2+ based connection underneath. No doubt more ISPs will soon follow.

In a major development two of the United Kingdom’s largest ISPs, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband (BSkyB), have “joined forces” with fibre optic infrastructure developer CityFibre to expand its existing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the City of York (England) by launching a 1000Mbps capable “ultra-fast” broadband service to thousands of local homes.
