BESA Reports Poor Broadband and WiFi Provision Hurting UK Schools

The British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) has told the Government to do more to improve Internet connectivity in Schools across the United Kingdom, after their annual survey of ICT capabilities found that poor WiFi provision was a “major problem” in 65% of primary and 54% of secondary schools. Meanwhile 42% of primary and 31% of secondary schools also considered themselves to be “under-resourced” in broadband provision.

Tata Comms Finds Brits Most Desire to Download at “Light Speed”

A new study of 1,770 Internet users in the United Kingdom, which was conducted by Tata Communications, has revealed that a desire for “light speed connectivity” came top of the list when respondents were asked for their thoughts on the most inspirational opportunity that the Internet will facilitate in the next 3-5 years.

Akamai Q2-2014 – Global Internet Speeds Top 4.6Mbps vs 11.1Mbps in UK

The latest State of the Internet Q2-2014 report from Akamai has claimed that average world broadband Internet download speeds increased by an impressive 21% in Q2 to hit 4.6Mbps. By comparison the UK saw its performance jump by 12% to reach 11.1Mbps, making us the 16th fastest country (down from 15th in Q1); although our peak speeds rank a place higher.

A new uSwitch study, which analysed data from 3.1 million UK Internet speedtests between 1st July 2013 and 30th June 2014, has concluded that consumers get the best broadband ISP performance if they go online at 5am (least busy) and the slowest if they start surfing at 9pm; a drop in speed of 21% was recorded between these periods.

Apple iOS8 Update Pushes TalkTalk’s UK Internet Traffic to 1.25Tbps

Consumer broadband ISP TalkTalk set yet another record last week when the release of Apple’s latest iOS8 software update for iPhones and iPads helped to push the Internet data traffic on their network in the United Kingdom to a new peak of 1.25Tbps (Terabits per second), which equates to 1,250Gbps (Gigabits | note: 1000Mbps = 1Gbps).

Strong Mobile Broadband penetration, good average download speeds and fixed broadband subscriber growth are all considered “strengths” that have helped to push the United Kingdom into 3rd place on Huawei’s new Global Connectivity Index, ranking us just behind the USA (2nd) and Germany (1st). Pay TV and Broadband Combo Proves Unattractive for Many UK Consumers

Does offering a Pay TV service make your home broadband ISP more attractive? The latest poll of 821 ISPreview.co.uk readers found that 67.7% of respondents would be unlikely to stick with their current Internet provider just because it could also offer a decent and affordable Pay TV service (15.4% answered “maybe” and 16.8% said “yes” they would be more likely to stay).

Broadband Helps UK Rank 9th in Global Competitiveness Report

The World Economic Forum has ranked the United Kingdom 9th in its Global Competitiveness Index 2014-2015 (up from 10th last year), with the country’s position being lifted due to its flexible labour market and work to reduce public sector debt. But strong broadband and Internet services have also given a boost to the country’s ‘Technological Readiness’ score.

Ofcom – UK Fixed Line Broadband ISP Connections Hit 22.8 Million

The communication regulator’s latest Telecoms Market Data Tables update for Q1-2014 has revealed that the United Kingdom is now home to a total of 22,808,000 fixed line residential and small business broadband ISP connections (excluding corporate lines), which is up by +1% on the previous quarter. Meanwhile more fixed phone line customers are going mobile.

Online estate agent House Simple has claimed that houses in broadband slowspots could lose 20-25% off the potential value of their property because buyers have become much more savvy and are increasingly paying attention to the quality of local Internet connectivity.

3269 Rural UK Premises Getting Superfast Broadband via RCBF Grants

The government’s £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund, which was setup to help rural areas in the last 10% of England gain access to superfast broadband (24Mbps+), has issued an update to confirm that a total of 3,269 (up from 2,118 at the last update) domestic and business premises are currently anticipated to have the “potential” to receive such a service thanks to RCBF investment.

Royal Mail Says Superfast Broadband to Boost UK Online Sales to GBP740m

A new Royal Mail commissioned study of 1,412 adults in Britain with access to “superfast broadband“, and 1,710 adults with no superfast service, has discovered that having faster connectivity boosts online sales and this equates to an increase in spending of 3.1% (around £23 a year) per superfast broadband user.

Broadband Delivery UK Scheme Passes the 1 Million Premises Mark

The Government have announced that the £1.7bn (excluding EU and BT contributions) state aid fuelled Broadband Delivery UK programme has now helped more than 1 million homes and businesses (premises passed) to get access to a “superfast broadband” connection, which BDUK typically defines as offering speeds of greater than 24Mbps (Megabits per second).

The Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK project, which is predominantly working with BT to make fixed line superfast broadband speeds of “greater than 24Mbps” (Megabits per second) available to around 95% of people by 2017, has now helped a total of 888,113 homes and businesses (premises passed) get faster connectivity.

EE UK Claims Some Customers Scrapping Home Broadband for 4G

A new survey of 1,000 4G users on EE’s network in the United Kingdom (conducted by TNS) has reported that the number of customers using fewer or no public WiFi services since getting 4G has reached 54% and 30% are using less or no home broadband. Indeed 3% of the operator’s subscribers claim to have cancelled home broadband after getting 4G.
