UK Superfast Broadband Coverage Hits 78% as Uptake Reaches 26.7%

The UK telecoms regulator has today published their annual 2014 Communications Market Report, which reveals how Next Generation Access (NGA) “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services are now available to 78% of the United Kingdom (up from 73% last year) and take-up has increased to 26.7% (up from 17.5% last year).

Virgin Media to Expand UK Cable Broadband Network, But Bleeds Subscribers

National UK cable provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has suffered a traditionally dismal second quarter (Q2-2014 Calendar) after seeing their total broadband subscriber growth decline by -12,000 to total 4,524,200 customers, which is a reverse from the +25,700 added in Q1. But the good news is that their network will soon reach another 100,000 homes, albeit only in East London.

UK Consumers Highlight Unreliable Broadband ISP Speed Estimates

The latest survey of 1,377 ISPreview.co.uk visitors has reported that 67.5% of respondents do not receive the broadband speed that their ISP first estimated, with most experiencing significantly slower performance than originally anticipated and the rest (27.3%) getting either exactly what they were promised or a faster service.

UPD Doubling Broadband Speeds Can Boost UK House Prices by 3 Percent

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Imperial College Business School has examined 15 years’ worth of data to identify the impact on UK house prices of faster Internet access. The conclusion found that property prices increase by an average of around 3% when the available broadband speeds doubled.

UPD Citizens Advice Slam UK Debt Collection for Broadband Cancel Fees

The UK Citizens Advice agency has criticized the “arbitrary cancellation fees” that some UK consumers face when attempting to switch broadband ISPs, with the average cost of such charges apparently coming out at £190 with peak fees of up to £625 being reported. Poor broadband speeds, connection faults and bad support are some of the key reasons why people switch.

UPDATE BT Reach 7.4m Broadband Customers as FTTrn Pilot Hits London

BT has today published their latest Q2-2014 (calendar) results and confirmed that its retail broadband base suffered a slowing of growth (+104k in Q2 vs +170k in Q1-2014) to total 7,385,000 customers. The operator has also revealed a new trial of superfast broadband FTTrn technology in London and confirmed that its FTTC network now reaches 20 million UK homes and businesses (premises passed).

Sky Broadband UK Growth Slows to Reach 5.247m Customers

Media and Internet giant Sky Broadband (BSkyB), which has just this morning gobbled Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland (here), has announced that their total home broadband base grew by only +50,000 during Q2-2014 to total 5,247,000 Internet access customers (down sharply from the +70k added in Q1-2014 and +110k in Q4-2013).

EE UK Sees Home Broadband Surge to 775000 Users and 4G Tops 4.2m

Mobile and Internet provider EE UK has reported that their fixed line home broadband ISP subscribers grew by an impressive +30k in Q2-2014 (calendar) to total 775,000 customers, which is up from the +19k added during Q1-2014 and also better than the +12k in Q4-2013. Meanwhile their 4G (LTE) users grew +1.3m in the quarter to top 4.183m (way up from the +889k added in Q1).

Broadband Customers Win Most of their ISP Complaints

A new survey conducted by Which? on 3,621 members of the public has revealed that 68% of consumers who escalate their complaint against a service or utility provider (e.g. broadband, phone, energy, water etc.), such as by using an independent ombudsman, win their case. But sadly 60% of those who attempted to resolve a complaint directly were left dissatisfied

OECD Rank UK 8th for Fixed Broadband Penetration as Fibre Optic Grows

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which covers 34 countries that support democracy and a market economy, has reported that at the end of 2013 the United Kingdom ranked 8th for fixed line broadband penetration (i.e. 35.2 subscribers per 100 inhabitants). Fibre optic (FTTH/P/B) connections also continued to grow.

TalkTalk UK Creep to 4.206m Broadband Users as York FTTP Plan Progresses

Budget ISP TalkTalk has revealed the latest results for Q2-2014 (calendar), which saw their broadband subscriber base grow by +10,000 in the quarter to total 4,206,000 (i.e. stable growth from +10k added in Q1). Meanwhile their planned roll-out of ultrafast FTTP broadband in the city of York is also making progress.

Three UK Named Fastest Mobile Broadband Operator in Road Trip Test

Mobile operator Three UK has come top in a new Road Trip 2014 study of Mobile Broadband performance, which among other things found that the provider delivered both the fastest average 3G (4.48Mbps DOWN and 1.4Mbps UP) and 4G (6.19Mbps DOWN and 1.54Mbps UP) based mobile Internet speeds. Meanwhile EE was a close second.

BT Claims Broadband Refusenik Missing Out on £1k in Benefits

BT claims that more than 99% of homes in the United Kingdom are within reach of a basic broadband connection and yet around 6.4 million people still aren’t online (ONS figures).
