Survey Finds Frustration with Broadband ISP Terms and Conditions

A new survey of 574 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 84.8% of respondents think that the Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) thrown at us by broadband providers are both far too long and confusing, which might explain why a third (32.9%) of people choose to skip them entirely.

RCBF Fails Target to Give 70000 Rural Premises Superfast Broadband

The government’s controversial £20 million Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF), which originally aimed to help remote rural areas in the last 5-10% of England gain access to superfast broadband, will fall well short of its original target to help up to 70,000 premises and is instead only set to pass between 20-25,000 premises.

Copper Lines Decline as Global Fixed Broadband Lines Top 690M

The latest Q1-2014 global broadband report from UK telecoms analyst Point Topic has revealed that the world is now home to 690.1 million fixed line broadband subscribers (+1.9% in the quarter), which is up from +0.4% recorded at the end of 2013. It’s also the first quarter where the market share for older copper line broadband connections (e.g. ADSL, SDSL) has dipped below 50%.

Parents Say UK ISPs Still Not Doing Enough to Protect Children Online

A new survey of nearly 500 parents conducted by Super Camps during June 2014 has found that 80% of respondents think broadband ISPs and regulators (Ofcom) have not yet done enough to make the Internet safe for children to use, which is despite all of the major providers now offering an enforced option to enable Parental Controls.

The average Internet download speed for the largest 8 fixed line home broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom has inched slightly upwards to 22.06Mbps during June 2014 (up from 21.7Mbps in May 2014), while uploads increased from an average of 5.04Mbps in May to 5.237Mbps now.

Ofcom Reports Sharp Rise in EE Home Broadband Complaints for Q1 2014

Ofcom’s quarterly consumer complaints report for Q1 2014 reveals that gripes about “service faults, billing and issues with changing provider” have triggered a sudden surge in complaints against EE’s fixed line home broadband packages, which means they’ve overtaken BT to become the most complained about of all the largest ISPs. Meanwhile TalkTalk continued to be the worst for fixed phone lines.

Akamai Q1-2014 Report Shows Average UK Internet Speeds Reach 9.9Mbps

Akamai, a content delivery network, has today published its latest State of the Internet report for Q1 2014 and revealed that average global broadband download speeds have increased by just 1.8% over the last quarter to 3.9Mbps (Megabits). Meanwhile the UK saw its performance rise by 5.5% to top 9.9Mbps, making us the 15th fastest country (down from 13th in Q4-2013), but most still aren’t ready for 4K video streams.

Ofcom Maps Rising Superfast Broadband Availability for 11 UK Cities

The communications and media regulator, Ofcom, has examined 11 cities across the United Kingdom to assess the availability of standard and superfast broadband Internet connectivity. Overall the study found that faster Next Generation Access (NGA) networks now reach around 90% in most of the cities but wide variations remain.

The Superfast Cymru scheme, which is supported by public funding and aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network (speeds of up to 80Mbps) available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016, has now helped a total of 134,707 premises (most are homes and 4% businesses) in Wales to access the new connectivity.

Cisco has published its 2014 Visual Networking Index (VNI) forecast, which reveals that consumer Internet traffic has grown from 26,213 PetaBytes in 2012 to 29,071PB at the end of 2013 (excluding business traffic) and, fuelled by a +29% annual growth in online video content, it’s expected to hit 83,298PB by 2018. But the predictions may not be reliable.

UK ISPs See Rising Broadband and Phone Satisfaction as BT Suffers Decline

The National Customer Satisfaction Index – United Kingdom (NCSI-UK), which is based on interviews with more than 6,799 customers during Q2-2014, has revealed that satisfaction with the country’s biggest four broadband Internet Service Providers is up 3% to an NCSI score of 69 out of 100. Overall Virgin Media came top and BT was bottom.
