The retail division of BT has ended 2013 with a total fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base of 7,111,000 and that represents a stable growth of +150k in Q4 2013 (down slightly from +156k in Q3). The figure includes 1.9 Million superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +228k in Q4 vs +195k added in Q3).

It’s been a difficult few months for BSkyB (Sky Broadband) but the operators latest Q4 2013 results have revealed that their broadband ISP subscriber base continued to grow by +110,000 in Q4 to total 5,127,000 (stable from +111k added in Q3). Churn also fell and ARPU grew but their unbundled (LLU) network expansion stopped.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme, which hopes to make superfast fixed line broadband speeds of 25Mbps+ available to 95% of the population by 2017, claims to have successfully passed 273,731 premises on 31st Dec 2013 with BT’s FTTC/P network (estimated to now be sitting at 300,000).

The communications regulator has today published its annual Consumer Experience Report (2013), which among other things reveals that consumer satisfaction with broadband service reliability has fallen from 88% in 2012 to 83% in 2013 and this is highest for those who live in rural areas where poor connectivity is more common.

Akamai has today published its latest quarterly State of the Internet Q3 – 2013 report, which reveals that the world’s average Internet download speed is now 3.6Mbps (up 10% from 3.3Mbps in Q2-2013). Meanwhile the United Kingdom scored 9.1Mbps (up 8.9% from 8.4Mbps) but still fell from 10th to be ranked 14th fastest.

Analysts working at Arieso have warned of an “explosive growth in mobile data usage“, fuelled by the latest generation of LTE based Mobile Broadband services, where just 0.1% of 4G customers were found to be “data hogs” that consume more than 50% of all downlink data (globally). iPhone5s owners were also named as the hungriest for data.

Internet technology giant Google has launched a new Video Quality Report service, which effectively benchmarks the performance of different broadband ISPs by how effectively they can stream videos from its hugely popular YouTube video streaming site. Now if only it was available to the United Kingdom.

A new survey commissioned by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which was conducted on 2,011 adults aged 16-75 in Great Britain by Ipsos Mori, has revealed that 53% of respondents view broadband Internet connectivity as the greatest engineering innovation of the last decade.

Ofcom has today published a new report for the Government that benchmarks the take-up, awareness and confidence of parents and children in relation to the use of online Parental Controls, such as the network-level Internet filters now being adopted by all of the major broadband ISPs. The results make for an interesting read.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released its latest annual report of fixed and wireless broadband development across its 34 member countries, which saw the United Kingdom jump from 9th to 8th place for fixed line broadband penetration and our annual fibre optic (FTTH/B) growth jump to 172%.

The latest consumer Internet speed testing data for December 2013 reveals that Virgin Media has maintained its position as the fastest broadband ISP with a download speed of 35.387Mbps (Megabits per second). By contrast the overall national average download speed for all the largest providers was 18.376Mbps and uploads hit 3.320Mbps.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has released its annual summary of digital music sales for 2013, which appears to shun the industry’s fear of Internet piracy from broadband ISP customers to report yet another strong year of growth in music downloads and online streaming.

Several major broadband ISPs, including BT and Sky Broadband (BSkyB), have both reported record breaking levels of Internet traffic over Christmas Day compared with the same time last year. For example, BT’s consumer data traffic peaked at 10pm with a transfer rate of 1,086,822 Megabits per second.

A new survey of 3,345 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that UK consumers are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the reliability and quality of customer support provided by their current broadband ISP, with more expecting to switch (migrate) to another ISP in 2014 than in 2013.

A new survey of 2,011 British citizens (aged 16-75) by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has reported that 43% saw more economic benefit in extending the reach of superfast broadband to all premises in the UK than they did from building new Nuclear Power plants, airports or high speed trains.

The total number of global broadband subscribers in Q3-2013 has grown by 1.8% in the quarter to reach 670 Million (up from just 0.7% added in Q2). But the data also reveals that the UK has a 132.1% annual growth rate for fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P/H etc.) and that puts us top of the table.
