Broadband Can Cut Energy Consumption by 2 Per Cent in USA and EU States

The Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) has published new research that reveals the impact of broadband use on reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions in the USA and EU-5 (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and UK). The total savings came out with an upper end of about 2% of total energy consumption for both regions.

TalkTalk UK and YouGov Study Finds 78% Reject Default Internet Censorship

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has today published the results of its latest YouGov research, which asked 2,010 online UK adults which system would be best for helping to protect children from accessing adult content on the internet. Overall 78% rejected the idea of default filtering, which would be automatically enabled on all internet accounts.

The latest monthly UK summary of anecdotal consumer broadband ISP speed testing data from Broadband.co.uk, which covers the past month of August 2012, reveals that the average internet download speed has fallen slightly from 17.262Mbps (Megabits per second) in July 2012 to 16.720Mbps now.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest quarterly consumer telecoms complaints data report. Overall complaint levels have been falling since last year, although the number of people complaining about how ISPs actually handle their complaints shot up during July 2012.

ISP Sky to Expand Unbundled Broadband Network Reach to 90% of UK by 2015

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has announced that its unbundled (LLU) network of UK telephone exchanges has hit the 2,000 mark, which means that their Unlimited Broadband service is now available to 82% of households but the roll-out won’t stop there. Sky has today set itself an even bigger target.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has issued its annual 2012 Internet Access (Households and Individuals) report, which found that 21 million households in Great Britain (80%) now have an internet connection (up from 77% in 2011 [19 million]) and 93% of those use broadband. The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest study of the United Kingdom’s average fixed line internet performance. The report, which is based on data from May 2012, reveals that the average broadband download speed has jumped from 7.6Mbps (Megabits/sec) in the last survey to reach 9Mbps now (+19%).

ONS Q2 2012 Report Finds 7.82 Million UK Adults Have Never Gone Online

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released its latest Internet Access Quarterly Update Q2-2012, which found that a total of 42.52 million UK adults have gone online (84% of the population; up from 83.7% in Q1). The number of adults who have never used the internet has thus declined since Q1 by -4% to 7.82 million (16%).

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed in its latest quarterly Telecoms Market Data Tables Q1 2012 report that the UK is now home to a total of 20.89 million fixed line home and small business broadband ISP connections (up from 20.43m in Q4-2011), which includes 552k superfast fibre optic based services (e.g. FTTC).
