O2 Wholesale Claims UK Businesses at Risk from Capped Data Allowances

Broadband ISP supplier O2 Wholesale UK (BE Wholesale) has warned that an “average business” of 50 employees can eat 61GB (GigaBytes) of internet data a month (i.e. email 26GB, browsing 22GB, video 1.7GB and video conferencing 7.9GB), which is allegedly more expensive for rival providers to cater for than their own “unlimited” option.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today published a new UK map of broadband speed availability, which claims that 13% of UK homes and businesses (nearly 4 million premises) still can’t receive internet download speeds of above 2Mbps (Megabits per second) and most are in rural areas.

The latest State of the Internet Q1 2012 report from content delivery firm Akamai has revealed that the average global internet download speed increased from 2.3Mbps in Q4-2011 to 2.6Mbps (Megabits\sec) at the end of the first quarter, while the average UK speed jumped from 4.9Mbps to 5.6Mbps (22nd fastest country) over the same period.

BT and Virgin Media Push UK Superfast Broadband to Over 2 Million Subscribers

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today revealed that some 10% (2 million+) of the United Kingdom’s fixed line ISP subscribers were connected via a superfast broadband (25Mbps+) service at the start of July 2012, which leaves 16.3 million on standard broadband products with sub-25Mbps speeds (total 21.3 million). But problems remain.

The latest batch of anecdotal UK consumer broadband ISP speed testing data from Broadband.co.uk, which covers the past month of July 2012, reveals that the average internet download speed has declined slightly from 17.662Mbps (Megabits per second) in June 2012 to 17.262Mbps now.

Broadband ISP PlusNet UK has revealed that internet streaming services (e.g. YouTube) now account for over 42% of all usage on its network during the evening and often peak at 50-60% depending on what’s happening (i.e. big sporting events). Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (BE Broadband) has released its latest results to 30th June (Q2), which revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base saw a shock fall to total 602,000 (-15,800 in the quarter). That’s a nosedive from the -2,500 lost in Q1-2012 and the -5,000 lost during Q4-2011.

BT has released its latest results to 30th June (Q2-2012), which saw their retail broadband ISP subscriber base add +85,000 new customers (down from +136k in Q1) to reach a total of 6,365,000. The operators superfast up to 80Mbps capable FTTC (BTInfinity) service also expanded to pass 11 million UK homes (up from 10m in Q1).

A new study of broadband performance across fifty of the country’s “most populated towns and cities” has revealed that the average UK broadband download speed grew by 16% to 7.84Mbps (up from 6.74Mbps in 2011). Meanwhile London tops the speed chart with an average of 13.262Mbps, while Norwich came last on 5.336Mbps.

OECD Ranks UK 8th in its Fixed Broadband Rankings of 34 Countries

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has released its annual 2012 Communications Market Report (CMR), which covers almost every conceivable variable of the UK’s media and telecom industries. In particular it reveals that 60% of UK homes can now access superfast broadband ISP services (up from 53% a year ago) but uptake is still low.
