The telecoms regulator has today published their latest Q2 2018 update to last year’s Connected Nations report, which uses more recent data from April 2018 to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. For example, “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has risen to 5% (1.4 million premises).

A recent update from OpenSignal, which uses crowd-sourced data to examine Mobile Network Operator (MNO) performance, has revealed that the United Kingdom ranks just 30th in the world for average mobile broadband download speed (19.01Mbps). By comparison South Korea came top (45.58Mbps) and India bottom (5.63Mbps).

The latest online ISPreview.co.uk poll of 1,977 readers has found that most respondents (63.3%) got their broadband router from a UK ISP (e.g. as part of a bundle), while 36.6% opted for a third-party device instead (e.g. purchased in a shop). In either case the majority appear to be satisfied with its quality.

A new survey from Which? has questioned 3,400 UK people about their triple-play bundles (TV, phone and broadband) during July 2018 and suggested that consumers may not be “getting value” from their packages. Cheaper options exist but it’s not always about the price.

The Citizens Advice agency has accused EE, Vodafone and Three UK of “routinely charging customers extra” for their handsets after they have been paid off, which occurs when you bundle a handset with your mobile plan but continue to pay the same monthly fee even after your contract ends.

This broadly highlights the progress that is being made in on-going efforts to spread affordable broadband connectivity across the world and suggests various ways to boost the effort.

Internet and phone providers Zen Internet and Plusnet have come top in a new biannual UK MSE survey of ISP customer service quality. Sadly the news isn’t so good for those at the opposite (bottom) end of the table, where TalkTalk and the Post Office could both be found.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has suggested via a new survey that people are likely to get “faster internet on the beach in your favourite holiday resort” than when you are trying to connect in the UK, although the survey doesn’t actually confirm that and the results are a mix of questionable interpretations.

Internet speed analyst firm SamKnows has conducted an interesting study, which examines the performance differences of major UK broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media and Vodafone) when being tasked with downloading PC games from Valve’s popular Steam digital distribution platform.

New research from financial analyst firm Plimsoll Publishing has claimed that Internet Service Providers (ISP) are one of the top 10 UK industries identified as being “under threat” and “most at risk” from Brexit, particularly a “No Deal” Brexit outcome.

A new study of home broadband packages offered by some of the UK’s largest ISPs – including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, EE, Plusnet and Virgin Media – has claimed that subscribers can face “steep price rises” of up to 62.5% (an extra £152 annually) if they stay loyal to their provider and don’t switch away.

Great Britain might take a drubbing for its lack of ultrafast pure fibre optic (FTTH/P) broadband ISP infrastructure but a new study by Qrator Labs suggests that at least our underlying internet links appear to be fairly resilient to faults, with England, Scotland and Wales collectively ranking 2nd best in the world.

The Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has today published its latest take-up data to the end of March 2018 (Q1) for the state aid supported roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks across the United Kingdom, which continues to see strong levels of adoption.

Broadband ISP, phone, mobile and TV provider BT has announced that they’re hiring more than 1,000 permanent customer service staff, which will support their aspiration to answer 100% of customer calls in UK & Ireland based call centres by 2020 and to “provide the best customer service in the UK.”

The latest quarterly update (calendar Q2 2018) from cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has revealed that the operator’s UK network has now reached another 118,000 premises (up from 111K added in Q1), while their broadband subscriber base totals 5,166,500 (up by 30K in Q2, which is flat from 31.2K in Q1).

A recently published study from researchers at the University of Pittsburgh (USA) and Bocconi University (Italy) attempts to “identify the causal impacts” of “high-speed internet” on sleep duration and sleep satisfaction. The results, they claim, suggest that those with good broadband tend to sleep 25 minutes less than those without.
