The UK Office for National Statistics has released their ‘Internet Access – Households and Individuals 2018‘ report, which among other things reveals that 90% of households in Great Britain have internet access (up from 89% in 2017) and 98% of those have a fixed broadband ISP connection. Email is the most popular activity.

Consumer magazine Which? has today claimed that advertised broadband speeds are now 41% slower on the “cheapest deals” since the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) began requiring UK ISPs to only promote “average” speeds (a median measured at peak time) for their headline packages.

Ofcom has today published their annual 2018 Communications Market Report (CMR), which reveals the latest information about the take-up and impact of Broadband, Mobile, Phone, TV and Radio services across the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland).

The Community Fibre Partnerships scheme from Openreach (BT), which offers grants worth up to £30K to help co-fund the cost of upgrading a digitally isolated community to receive their FTTC or FTTP based superfast broadband ISP network, has now passed around 80,000 UK premises via 600 communities.

The latest ISPreview.co.uk poll of 2,046 readers has found that 54.7% would reject an ideal house if it couldn’t deliver their desired speed and a third seek 100Mbps+.

BT has published their latest results to the end of June (Q1 2018/19 financial), which report that the coverage of Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+ via FTTP and G.fast) network has reached 1.7 million UK premises. But sadly they’ve begun hiding their retail ISP customer figures.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has released their latest results to the end of June 2018 (financial Q4 17/18), which reveals that “Fibre” (FTTC) penetration has risen to 38% (up from 33% six months ago) of their UK broadband base. Plus they’re planning an early Sky Mobile launch of 5G and have a new broadband router coming.

Telecoms giant Vodafone has today published their latest quarterly results to the end of June 2018 (Q1 FY19), which saw them add +52,000 new broadband and phone customers (down from +65,000 in the previous quarter) to total 435,000. Meanwhile their mobile base shrank to 17,432,000 (quarterly fall of -83,000).

The latest Engine Customer Experience Report 2018 has claimed that the UK Broadband & Pay-TV media sector has risen one spot to 8th place for best customer service and experience thanks to a 3% rise, putting it just ahead of the mobile sector and utilities (9th). But overall this is still way down the sector ranking table.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that the completion of their joint Superfast Cymru contract with the Welsh Government has resulted in 733,000 extra premises across Wales being put within reach of faster broadband ISP speeds, which drops to 717,000 for those able to access “superfast” speeds of 30Mbps+.

Ofcom has just published their latest Q1 2018 UK consumer complaints study, which notes that Sky Broadband attracted the least gripes for fixed line broadband and phone services, while TalkTalk attracted the most complaints for both. Pay TV and Mobile providers are also covered.

New research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has warned that rising sea levels will soon threaten the land-based stations for undersea fibre optic cables, as well as data centres and other vital international telecoms infrastructure situated in or around low lying coastal areas.

Ofcom has today published their annual Media Nations 2018 report and revealed that subscriptions to popular broadband based video streaming platforms (e.g. Netflix, NOW TV and Amazon) have for the first time overtaken those of traditional Pay TV in the UK. On top of that Pay TV revenues also declined for first time.

UK ISP TalkTalk has published a short trading update for the three months to 30th June 2018 (Q1 FY19), which finally gives us a solid figure for their broadband subscriber base of 4,219,000 and that’s because it grew by +80,000 net adds in the quarter (Q1 FY18: +20k, Q4 FY18: +109k). There’s also a small update on FTTH in York.

A new survey from Three UK claims to reveal that SMEs believe mobile technology and internet access (mobile broadband) is better on their mobiles phones than on other devices, while 23% still find mobile tariffs to be complicated. As such the operator has launched a three new 4G plans called ‘Simply Business‘.

New data from research group M-Lab and Cable.co.uk has revealed that for 2018 the United Kingdom delivered an average (mean) broadband download speed of just 18.57Mbps (up from 16.51Mbps in 2017) and ranks 35th fastest in the world (down from 31st) versus 200 other countries.

The latest independent model has estimated that the coverage of fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks across the United Kingdom has grown to 95.3% at the end of June 2018 (up from 95.1% in March 2018), while “full fibre” (FTTP/H) networks now reach 3.82% of premises.
