A new survey conducted by uSwitch.com, which fielded responses from a “nationally representative” sample of 2,002 UK adults, has claimed that 29% of Mobile Phone (2G, 3G and 4G) users suffer from poor or no indoor reception at home. This rises to 50% for those living in rural areas.

Comparison site Cable has published the winners of a huge new ISP survey, which interviewed 16,753 UK broadband customers to identify the best providers via five categories (reliability, value for money, customer service, speed and switching). Virgin Media and Plusnet came top.

A CBI survey of 727 UK businesses has found that just 20% are satisfied with the Government’s effort to improve national infrastructure (energy, transport etc.) and 74% doubt it will improve by 2022, although 59% did feel confident that digital infrastructure (broadband etc.) would improve.

A new survey of 1,110 ISPreview.co.uk readers, which was conducted between 5th Sept and 19th October 2017, reveals that 31.6% of respondents lost their number while migrating to a new ISP and 49.4% said that the fear of losing their number had discouraged them from future switching.

A survey of 1,709 UK telecoms customers in June to July 2017, which was conducted by Which?, found that 53% had experienced a “problem with their broadband” in the last year. Sadly customers of Virgin Media (61%), TalkTalk (60%), Sky Broadband (56%) and BT (54%) were “most likely” to suffer.

The Government has today published their Internet Safety Strategy green paper, which sets out how they intend to tackle online dangers like cyber-bullying, trolling and under-age access to porn. But it also appears to soften earlier plans for a mandatory approach to network-level ISP internet censorship.

The latest independent data to September 2017 has estimated that “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable fixed line networks now cover 93.9% of premises in the United Kingdom (96.6% if you include all “fibre based” lines of any speed inc. sub-24Mbps), with Wales and Scotland both touching completion.

New research has estimated that between 950,000 and 1.1 million premises, which were already being catered for by Virgin Media’s cable broadband network, have been overbuilt by networks (e.g. Openreach (BT)) supported through the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project.

The Social Market Foundation, a non-partisan think tank, has warned that broadband and telephony remain “highly concentrated consumer markets” and a lack of effective competition can translate into higher prices, poorer services, less choice and possibly lower rates of investment or innovation.

Cityfibre has published their latest results for the six months to 30th June 2017 (H1), which reveals that they now have 4,235 connected customer premises on their UK “full fibre” FTTP network (up from 3,962 in H2 2016) and a total of 3,556 route kilometres of operational ducted fibre (up from 3,383km).

Broadband providers Virgin Media and Sky Broadband have today been praised by Ofcom’s Q2 2017 UK consumer complaints report after they received fewer gripes than any other ISP for their service. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for BT and TalkTalk, which attracted the most complaints.

The European Union’s move in June 2017 to scrap roaming charges for mobile calls, texts and data / internet services (here) has resulted in operators’ reporting a huge rise in data traffic due to travellers, which has multiplied by between 3-6 times this summer compared with last year.

The European Commission has published a new study from IHS Markit and Point Topic, which summarises the current state of broadband coverage across Europe and measures how close the EU is to achieving their Digital Agenda goals (i.e. 30Mbps for all, with 50% subscribed to 100Mbps+ by 2020).

A new batch of independent data has revealed the top 30 local authorities across the United Kingdom with the highest availability of ultrafast “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) broadband connectivity, which unsurprisingly sees the table topped by Hull, East Yorkshire and Cornwall.

The latest biannual survey of UK phone and broadband providers by consumer magazine Which? has once again named Zen Internet as the best overall ISP (85% for customer satisfaction), but the same could not be said for TalkTalk that continues to languish at the bottom on a score of 40%.
