Cisco has published their 12th annual 2017 Visual Networking Index (VNI), which predicts that world Internet (IP) traffic will grow from 96EB (ExaBytes) a month in 2016 to 278EB in 2021. Elsewhere average fixed broadband speeds in the UK will double from 29.8Mbps in 2016 to 60.2Mbps by 2021.

The latest independent data for June 2017 has estimated that fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks are now available to 93% of premises across the United Kingdom (96.1% if you include all “fibre based” lines, such as sub-24Mbps services), although some parts are lagging behind.

Telecoms giant BT has today published a new report that examines their environmental impact, which among other things reveals that their UK retail ISP division has refurbished 500,000+ HomeHub broadband routers over the past 18 months (these are used to replace any that customers return as faulty).

The latest ISPreview.co.uk poll of 1,384 website readers has found that the vast majority of respondents do know how to use their broadband router’s admin interface (92.5%), although 25.9% have never changed the default Wi-Fi password and 23.9% haven’t changed their router’s admin password.

Akamai‘s first quarter ‘State of the Internet‘ report has revealed that the global average fixed line broadband download speed is now 7.2Mbps (up 2.3% from 7Mbps in Q4 2016) vs 16.9Mbps in the United Kingdom (up 3.6% from 16.3Mbps). The UK’s country ranking has also risen from 16th to 15th.

Cable operator Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media, has claimed that the “economic effects” of their investments in the UK (i.e. higher broadband speeds, improved productivity and price competition) between 2013 and 2017 have delivered a “total social benefit” worth £1.38bn.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the outcome from their first 2017 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Giffgaff top with a customer score of 81%. Sadly Vodafone and EE could both be found languishing at the bottom of the table on 50% (tied).

A new update from Point Topic has summarised the latest data from ISPs in the United Kingdom, which found that faster Cable (DOCSIS) and “fibre” (FTTC/P/H/B) based broadband lines have finally overtaken older / slower pure copper Digital Subscriber Line (e.g. ADSL) services.

The latest Q1 2017 figures from the Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has revealed that some 4,426,493 additional premises across the United Kingdom can now order a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service as a result of their joint investment with local councils and the private sector.

A recent survey of British adults by YouGov has revealed that 16% of people have used a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or Proxy Server, with 48% adopting it in order to circumvent region (geo) blocking of online content and 44% using it to enhance their Internet security.

The Office for National Statistics has published their latest annual 2017 Internet Access report, which reveals that 9% (4.8 million) of UK adults have never used the Internet and that’s down from 10.2% (5.3 million) last year. Sadly issues of age and disability remain key barriers.

Telecoms operator Vodafone UK has today published their Q1 2017 (calendar) results, which saw their fixed line broadband base grow by +33,000 customers in the quarter to total 216,000 (up from +16k in Q4 2016). Meanwhile 4G coverage now stands at 96% (98% by Ofcom’s definition).

The European Commission has published their annual 2017 European Digital Progress Report, which confirms that Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Greece all lag behind the rest of the 28 EU member countries when it comes to ultrafast “full fibre” (FTTH/P/B) broadband coverage.

A new survey of 1,465 UK businesses by the British Chambers of Commerce has found that 70% of firms have suffered Mobile “not spots” (no signal) or “partial not-spots” (basic cover via only some networks), while 91% of those who suffered such issues are rural based (falls to 56% for urban firms).

The BT Group has released their latest quarterly report (Q1 2017 calendar), which saw their retail broadband base reach a total of 9,276,000 subscribers (up by 29K vs 83K in Q4 2016) and Openreach has begun a consultation on the “potential benefits and costs of a large-scale FTTP deployment.“

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has revealed that residential consumers in the United Kingdom pay an average of $0.34 (USD PPP) per Mbps (Megabit) of fixed line broadband bandwidth, which compares with a global average of $0.85 and just $0.05 in the cheapest country of Singapore.
