Cisco Predicts UK Fixed Broadband Speeds to Average 50Mbps by 2019

Cisco has published its annual 2015 Visual Networking Index (VNI) forecast, which reveals that world Internet traffic has grown to reach 59,851 PetaBytes (PB) per month and could hit 167,973PB by 2019. Meanwhile average fixed broadband speeds in the UK are currently 23.2Mbps and should rise to 50Mbps by 2019.

The 2015 Internet Users report from the Government’s Office for National Statistics has reported that 86% of adults (44.7 million) in the United Kingdom had used the internet, in the last 3 months, by the end of March 2015. But issues like disability and old age meant that 11% of adults (5.9m) had never gone online (down from 6.4m one year ago).

A new online YouGov poll of 100 IT decision makers in Scotland, which was commissioned by Cityfibre, has reported that 92% of respondents view high quality, fast broadband as important to the success of their company and yet 52% felt as if connectivity in Scotland was worse than other parts of the UK.

Survey Finds UK House Buyers Rejecting Homes with Slow Broadband

The latest survey of 2,119 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that nearly three quarters (71.9%) of respondents would reject an otherwise ideal house if its broadband speeds were too slow, while 22.8% said they’d rather negotiate a lower price and only 5.1% weren’t at all bothered about Internet performance.

Virgin Media UK Surges to 4.97M Broadband Subscribers After Ireland Boost

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has shot up from having a total of 4,625,800 broadband subscribers at the end of last year to 4,969,700 at the end Q1 2015, although this is predominantly due to a move that combines the operator’s UK results with that of UPC Ireland (Sky does something similar).

The national UK telecoms operator, BT, has today published the latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar) and confirmed that their retail business added +121,000 new broadband subscribers in the quarter (up from +119k in Q4 2014) to total 7,713,000, which includes 3,010,000 on BTInfinity “fibre broadband” (up by +266k vs +209k in Q4 2014).

UK Home and Small Business Broadband ISP Lines Hit 23.7M in 2014

Ofcom’s latest Telecoms Market Data Tables update has revealed that the United Kingdom ended 2014 with a total of 23.73 million fixed line residential and small business broadband ISP connections (excluding corporate lines), which is up by +319k in Q4 2014 and marks a good quarter of growth from the +192k added in Q3 2014.

Most Brits Would Sacrifice Chocolate, Alcohol and Sex Before Broadband

A new survey of 3,000 consumers by fibre optic broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which appears to consist largely of London dwellers, has found that Brits would sooner sacrifice chocolate (45%), alcohol (24%) or sex (22%) for a week than their broadband connection (9%).

Good Growth Pushes EE to 884000 Home Broadband Users as 4G Hits 9.3M

The impending acquisition of EE by BT isn’t putting a dampener on the operators growth, with their latest Q1-2015 results showing a +50k increase in fixed line home broadband subscribers to total 884,000 (the best growth yet; up from +41k in Q4 2014, +18k in Q3-2014 and +30k in Q2-2014). Meanwhile 4G coverage and uptake is also booming.

Sky UK Sees Stable Growth to Reach 5.53 Million Broadband Subscribers

Sky (Sky Broadband) has released their latest batch of Q1-2015 (calendar) results since they merged with Sky Italia (Italy) and Sky Deutschland (Germany), which reveals that they added +100,000 broadband subscribers for UK and Ireland in the quarter to total roughly 5.53 million (stable from the +106k added in Q4-2014 and up from +75k in Q3-2014).
