We’re finishing 2019 by taking a look back over the year to see how average broadband ISP download and upload speeds have changed across the top national fixed line and mobile operators. Customers of broadband ISP TalkTalk gobbled less data on Christmas Day 2019 (25th Dec) than a normal Wednesday. Overall internet traffic on the provider’s network peaked at 4.107Tbps (Terabits per second) this year (3.35Tbps in 2018), which compares with 5.876Tbps on the first Wednesday of this month (3.96Tbps in 2018).

Last month UK ISP TalkTalk promised that they would launch a new range of ultrafast broadband packages “before the end of the calendar year“, which for the first time would be based off Openreach’s (BT) new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. The latest Q2 2019 consumer complaints report from Ofcom has confirmed that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most moans for fixed line broadband, while Plusnet were the worst for landline phone and Virgin Media did the same for both Mobile and Pay TV. On the flip side Sky Broadband generated the fewest gripes.

Last week saw UK ISP TalkTalk discount the price of their 38Mbps (average peak time speed) “Faster Fibre” FTTC broadband and phone bundle to £21.95 and this week they’ve decided to do exactly the same with their “Superfast Fibre” 67Mbps package, which oddly makes them both the same price for the first 18 months of service.

The latest results (Q1 FY20) from TalkTalk have revealed that the UK ISP still hasn’t sealed a deal to sell FibreNation and its rollout of a new “full fibre” broadband network, although they did see strong take-up of their FTTC packages and confirmed plans to launch ultrafast FTTP via Openreach “before the end of the calendar year.“

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk intended to publish their latest financial results today but this has just been delayed as a result of “advanced negotiations with interested parties” over the future of their sibling FibreNation business, which has been trying to drum up £1.5bn of investment to support their UK “full fibre” roll-out.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has launched a new promotion ahead of the Black Friday event, which drops the monthly price of their 38Mbps (average peak time speed) “Faster Fibre” FTTC broadband and phone bundle to £21.95 and their 67Mbps “Superfast Fibre” option to £24.45 for new subscribers. Both include free setup.

Internet provider TalkTalk Business has today relaunched their uncontended Ethernet over FTTC (EoFTTC) service to partners with improved features for small business customers. This is not to be confused with the broadband focused Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) product that consumers buy.

Over the past few years many of the broadband ISP market’s smallest and biggest UK players, such as BT and Sky Broadband, have deployed the “new” IPv6 internet addressing standard. Sadly the same cannot be said for Virgin Media, TalkTalk, Vodafone and Plusnet. We asked each for an update and here’s what they said.

Low cost broadband ISP TalkTalk has worked with internet security firm F-Secure to launch a new Password Manager app as part of their “SuperSafe Boost“, which securely stores logins so customers only need to remember one master password as the app automatically populates log-in details.

Low cost broadband ISP TalkTalk is facing the prospect of a “landmark” legal case by one of its former Programme Directors, Rebecca Burke, who is crowd-funding to bring an equal pay claim against them after she was allegedly paid “40% less salary and 50% less bonus” than three other male colleges that were “in my team doing the same job.”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned two email adverts for TalkTalk’s ISP after they “misleadingly” told customers that “your usage is affecting your broadband service” and “you’ve hit your limit 3 times in 30 days” before recommending an upgrade to “fibre“, even though neither user was at such a “limit“.
