Broadband ISP TalkTalk saw its internet traffic reach a new peak of 6.833Tbps (Terabits per second) at 21:25 last night, which is up from 6.488Tbps in June 2020 (here). The latest surge in data demand was driven by customers attempting to view the Champions League (football) final.
According to the provider, it was thought that the absence of a home Premier League team in European football’s showcase event might have dampened demand, but that proved not to be the case as fans reportedly rushed to watch the game for free on YouTube.
Gary Steen, MD of Technology, Change and Security at TalkTalk, said: “We get how important having a super fast, reliable internet connection is to our football supporting customers and TalkTalk’s unlimited fibre broadband packages deliver just that. We have been investing significantly in our network over the years to optimise both speeds and capacity and we are very well prepared for surges in demand just like this.”
Dear Mr Steen, we have fibre in our area, and many companies such as BT will happily run FTTP, TalkTalk can’t due to lack of investment.
