The broadband based YouView video-on-demand and catch-up TV (IPTV) service, which is being bundled by a number of ISPs (e.g. BT and TalkTalk) in the United Kingdom and can also be brought separately at retail, has officially branched out into the integrated TV market with Sony’s new 2015 BRAVIA range becoming the first to benefit.

Cable operator Virgin Media, which likes to think of itself as a premium provider, has heavily criticised rival ISPs like Sky Broadband and TalkTalk for offering aggressively cheap “free broadband” promotions. The Liberty Global owned operator warned the situation was “completely paradoxical and ironic” because it risks damaging the case for investment in future upgrades.

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has today published their latest results for Q4-2014 (calendar), which reported that broadband subscribers increased at the stable rate of +15K (same as in Q3) in the quarter to total 4,236,000 and “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) surged forward by +88K (up from +67K in Q3) to account for 396,000 of that total.

MoneySuperMarket.com has today announced the winners of their Broadband Supers 2015 Awards, which much like last week’s uSwitch event saw almost all of the big broadband ISPs walk away with at least one award from a selection of several categories. Generally PlusNet appeared to do the best after it picked up three awards for Best Value Broadband, Best for Quality and Reliability and Best for Customer Service.

The annual uSwitch.com Broadband Awards 2015, which took place last night at The Gherkin in London, have unveiled a variety of winners across multiple categories for broadband, TV, phone and mobile services. Top among the winners was Virgin Media, which took three awards for Best Customer Rated Broadband, Fastest Broadband and Best Broadband Provider.

The national UK telecoms regulator has today revealed the outcome from its recent consultation into whether or not the cost of BT’s superfast broadband Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines for rival ISPs needed to be adjusted in order to “maintain a sufficient margin between [their] wholesale and retail superfast broadband charges“.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has predictably followed last year’s similar move by BT (here) and made the popular Netflix Internet TV and Movie streaming service available to owners of their YouView (IPTV) based platform, with those who pre-registered for the service being first in line to receive it on their set-top-box.

Internet provider TalkTalk Business has cut the price of their Complete bundle, which among other things includes unlimited broadband and anytime UK landline and mobile calls, from £10.50 +vat per month to just £5.25 (plus phone line rental of £14.50 +vat per month).

Customers of Virgin Media’s defunct copper-line based Virgin National (Virgin.net / ADSL2+) broadband platform, which were last year informed that they’d been sold to low cost rival ISP TalkTalk (here), have started to receive their migration notices with details of the planned move.

As predicted last week TalkTalk has this morning confirmed the acquisition of Tesco’s Blinkbox Movies (video streaming) business, but in a more surprising move they’ve also gobbled the supermarket giants budget fixed line broadband (75,000 subs) and phone (20,000 subs) customers. Apparently the assets have been acquired free of debt and as a single transaction for cash.

Consumers are gobbling more and more data from broadband ISPs every year, yet that hasn’t stopped low cost Internet provider TalkTalk from announcing that their carbon footprint (emissions) have actually fallen by 34% between 2010 (29,143 tons of Co2) and 2014 (19,291 tons).

At least part of Sky’s (Sky Broadband) popular Internet-based NOW TV service, which offers a mix of premium TV, Sport and Movie content (including live channels) delivered via broadband, could vanish from BT and TalkTalk’s TV services unless the native YouView platform can be adapted to support live TV channel streaming.

Low cost broadband ISP TalkTalk seems keen to build on their existing YouView (IPTV) based TV platform and part of that on-going effort now looks set to include the possible acquisition of Blinkbox from supermarket giant Tesco, which has been suffering from a mountain of financial trouble. Meanwhile Vodafone’s early interest has waned.

ISPreview.co.uk takes a look back at how the top fastest and largest national Mobile Broadband (3G/4G) and Home Broadband providers have performed over the last quarter. Overall Virgin Media still tops the fixed line table with an average Internet download speed of 53.20Mbps (unchanged from Q3 2014), while Vodafone delivered the best mobile performance at 13.78Mbps.

The Citizens Advice agency has called on the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to toughen up its rules after the CA felt it necessary to lodge four complaints against adverts for broadband and phone bundles from BT, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk due to their allegedly “misleading” prices.

The recent spate of Internet access discounts from the big UK ISPs has continued today with TalkTalk matching Sky Broadband by offering their Simply Broadband service free for the first 12 months of service (£3.50 a month thereafter), which includes a £50 Love2shop voucher.

As expected all of the United Kingdom’s largest broadband ISPs are now starting to interrupt the website browsing sessions of their existing customers in order to offer them an enforce option about whether or not to enable their network-level filtering (Parental Control) services, which block websites that are deemed to contain “adult content” and is a Government requirement.
