Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has reportedly sold 100,000 of its old copper-line based Virgin National (Virgin.net / ADSL2+) broadband subscribers to rival ISP TalkTalk.

A circular advert for TalkTalk’s broadband package has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for being “misleading” after it claimed that the ISPs new Super Router device was able to offer subscribers “unbeatable signal strength” and the “UK’s fastest Wi-Fi technology.” Oops.

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has published their latest Q3-2014 (calendar) results, which saw broadband subscribers increase by +15,000 in the quarter to total 4,221,000 (up from +10k in Q2 and the same in Q1). Meanwhile the joint roll-out of their 1Gbps capable FTTP broadband network in York has finally started the build phase. A new Talk2Go app for iOS and Android is also out (i.e. mobile calls over a fixed line).

Budget ISP TalkTalk is understandably keen to move away from last month’s price hike news (here) and have today announced a new offer that cuts the price of their triple-play broadband, phone and TV (YouView) bundles in half for the first 12 months of service (note: 18 month contract applies). Subscribers will also get a £75 Love2shop Voucher.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has predictably announced a raft of annual price rises and service changes for their broadband and phone products, most of which will be introduced on 1st December 2014. Customers who don’t like the changes have been told that they can “cancel by contacting us within 30 days of receiving your price notification letter“. But some new benefits have also been added (free mobile SIMs for Plus TV etc.).

Budget ISP TalkTalk have made their entry-level unlimited SimplyBroadband package free for the first 12 months of service (normally £3.50 a month), which can also be taken alongside the half-price Superpowered Fibre (FTTC) upgrade (£5 a month instead of £10). On top of that new customers get a £75 Love2shop Voucher (usable in lots of stores).

The High Court of Justice in London has today ruled on a case that concerned the abuse of commercial Trade Marks. Crucially the outcome means that several of the United Kingdom’s largest broadband ISPs (BT, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, EE and TalkTalk) can now also be forced to block websites that abuse company trademarks / logos, such as by dealing in counterfeit goods.

High street retail giant Argos has joined forces with Go ON UK and ISP TalkTalk in order to make 10,000 free tablet computers and one year’s worth of free broadband connectivity available to those who take part in a workshop at one of over 120 participating stores, costing £20 per person (ah.. so it’s not completely free then).

Ofcom’s latest biannual report into the real-world speeds of fixed line broadband ISP consumers across the United Kingdom reveals that the Internet performance gap between rural and urban areas is still wide, yet their speeds are now improving at a faster rate (+20% rural vs +5% urban / suburban). Overall the average download rate has risen by just 5% to reach 18.7Mbps (up from 17.8Mbps in the last report).

The boss of TalkTalk’s business division, Charles Bligh, has confirmed that the ISP ultimately wants 50-60% of homes in the United Kingdom to connect via their new ultrafast 1000Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. But in order for this to work Bligh admits that take-up will need to be 30-40% or higher and the cost per home must be below £500. Difficult.

CityFibre have unsurprisingly announced that Fujitsu has been chosen as the build partner for the first deployment phase of their new city-wide Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) broadband network for homes and businesses in York (England), which is being conducted alongside Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and TalkTalk.

Both Virgin Media Business and TalkTalk Business have today launched a range of new broadband packages targeted at small and medium sized businesses, although both ISPs seems to be producing options that somewhat mirror their domestic services; albeit with only a few differences.

Consumer broadband ISP TalkTalk set yet another record last week when the release of Apple’s latest iOS8 software update for iPhones and iPads helped to push the Internet data traffic on their network in the United Kingdom to a new peak of 1.25Tbps (Terabits per second), which equates to 1,250Gbps (Gigabits | note: 1000Mbps = 1Gbps).

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has published the first responses to its latest Business Connectivity Market Review 2016 (BCMR2016) consultation and perhaps unsurprisingly it finds rivals including Vodafone, BSkyB (Sky Broadband), TalkTalk and Virgin Media all demanding greater access to BT’s cable ducts, dark fibre and leased lines.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk looks set to release the first new firmware (v1.05t) for their recently launched “Super Router” (Huawei HG635), which boasts a built-in VDSL2 modem and the most recent Gigabit capable wireless networking (802.11ac). Better WiFi and UI improvements appear to be on the cards.

Customers looking to take one of Virgin Media and TalkTalk’s broadband bundles should note that this week both providers have launched a number of new time-limited special gift credit and voucher offers, some of which are worth up to £120. Virgin are also offering a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 on their top package.
