Hands up if your broadband ISP makes the upload (upstream) speed of your Internet package clear on their advertising? We thought not. Sadly only a few of the major ISPs even bother to advertise upload performance and those that do only tend to show it on certain products. But how fast you can push information into the online world does matter and its importance is growing.

Internet provider TalkTalk Business has allegedly taken the seemingly unusual decision to forward a USA sourced copyright infringement notice from Warner Bros., which concerns a suspected attempt to share the recent Godzilla movie over P2P (BitTorrent), to a customer via its sibling ISP Opal Solution.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has revealed the latest results for Q2-2014 (calendar), which saw their broadband subscriber base grow by +10,000 in the quarter to total 4,206,000 (i.e. stable growth from +10k added in Q1). Meanwhile their planned roll-out of ultrafast FTTP broadband in the city of York is also making progress.

UK ISP Adult Internet Website Blocking Report Finds Limited Take-up

Ofcom has today published a new report that looks at the measures adopted by four of the largest broadband ISPs (BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband) to help parents “protect children from harmful content online” by offering network-level filtering (censorship) systems to block adult sites. But adoption by new subscribers is fairly limited and there have been a number of errors.

The Government, Rights Holders and four of the country’s largest broadband ISPs, including Virgin Media, BT, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband, have resolved their differences and announced the launch of a new “education programme” to help combat Internet piracy (copyright infringement) by sending warning letters to customers suspected of sharing “illegal” copyright content via File Sharing (P2P) networks.

Google Ponders Building a Fibre Optic Broadband ISP Network in UK Cities

Internet giant Google appears to be probing the British broadband market for a partner to help build their own 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, which is despite previously stating that they had no plans to ever take the Google Fibre service outside of the USA.

UPDATE YouView Broadband TV Service Brings Faster Humax DTR-T2000

The broadband based YouView (IPTV) catch-up and video-on-demand TV service, which is also bundled via several broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk etc.), has today launched a cheaper and faster set-top-box for retailers called the Humax DTR-T2000 (NOT to be confused with the HDR-2000T). But sadly there’s still no mention of WiFi support.

TalkTalk Ads Banned for Claiming to Offer Britain’s “lowest priced” Broadband

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a mailing, website and press advert for TalkTalk after a member of the public and BT complained that the ISP was misleading the public by claiming to offer “Britain’s lowest priced” totally unlimited broadband service in all three promotions.

UK ISP TalkTalk Coughs to Censorship of Political Blogger Guido Fawkes

Internet provider TalkTalk has confirmed that their HomeSafe Parental Control service (i.e. network-level filtering) does indeed block customers from being able to view the website of well-known right-wing political blogger and journalist Guido Fawkes (Paul Staines) – http://order-order.com, which is despite the ISP initially issuing a strong denial. Sadly they don’t plan to lift the ban.

UK ISP TalkTalk Cuts Superfast FTTC Broadband Price in Half

Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has cut the price of their ‘Superpowered Fibre’ (FTTC) upgrade in half for the first 6 months of service, which means that existing customers can add broadband speeds of up to 38Mbps for an extra £5 per month (normally +£10) on top of their current package.

Ofcom Reports Sharp Rise in EE Home Broadband Complaints for Q1 2014

Ofcom’s quarterly consumer complaints report for Q1 2014 reveals that gripes about “service faults, billing and issues with changing provider” have triggered a sudden surge in complaints against EE’s fixed line home broadband packages, which means they’ve overtaken BT to become the most complained about of all the largest ISPs. Meanwhile TalkTalk continued to be the worst for fixed phone lines.

UPD Ofcom Tackle BT’s Fibre Broadband Prices But Kill TalkTalk Complaint

The national UK telecoms regulator has today dropped TalkTalk’s “margin squeeze” complaint against BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC) prices, but has moved to promote competition in the market by launching a new consultation that would force BT to “maintain a sufficient margin between its wholesale and retail superfast broadband charges” and thus allow other ISPs “profitably to match its prices“.

UK ISP TalkTalk has unveiled a revamp of the ‘Player’ for their YouView (IPTV) TV based broadband and phone bundles, which ordinarily gives customers access to all the latest blockbuster movies and catch-up content. The enhanced Player includes a series of new features, such as an improved search engine and more of the latest blockbusters to rent from £4.00 for 48hrs.

UK ISP TalkTalk Boosts Broadband Network Capacity with Zayo Deal

Budget Internet provider TalkTalk has agreed to an extension of its existing network capacity contract with international bandwidth infrastructure provider Zayo Group, which should boost the ISPs broadband capacity in the United Kingdom and improve connectivity with New York and Europe.

ASA Uphold TalkTalk Complaint Against Misleading BT Sport TV Advert

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint by TalkTalk and several others against a TV advert for BT’s Sport service, which failed to make sufficiently clear that it wasn’t free to business customers or that it was only available to view online, unless customers also had access to Sky Digital or BT TV with superfast broadband via BTInfinity.
