Ofcom has today published their latest Q3 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which identified both TalkTalk and Shell Energy as the providers that attracted the most gripes for fixed broadband services, while TalkTalk also took flak for landline phone services and iD Mobile came top for Mobile moans.

Mobile network operator Three UK has announced that around 2,500 of their retail staff – working in 311 retail stores – will be awarded pay increases of up to 12.6% this month, which will be reflected by new minimum hourly rates set at £10.13 nationwide and £11.40 in London, excluding bonus.

A new multi-million pound data centre deal has today been signed between BT and BAI Communications, which is designed to support last year’s (here) agreement with EE and Three UK to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels).

Mobile operator Vodafone UK is allegedly reported to have explored a move to merge with rival Three UK by acquiring them from parent CK Hutchison Holdings. But the expression of interest, which is said to have been made last year, did not lead to an agreement and is no longer part of active negotiations.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics, which was recently gobbled by Ookla (here), has today published their latest H2 2021 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) and broadband performance across the United Kingdom, which once again awards the top spot to EE (BT), with Vodafone being the runner-up.

New customers of Three UK‘s 5G powered unlimited Home Broadband service, which claims to offer “average download speeds” of 100Mbps (this will vary.. a lot), can now take the service from just £21 per month for 24-months of service (dropping to £14 on their 4G package). Various other discount options also exist.

Mobile operators Vodafone and EE (BT) have moved to mildly delay the planned reintroduction of EU roaming charges, which will eventually see most customers being charged £2 per day to use their UK allowances (calls, texts and data / mobile broadband) across related countries. Previously, you could do this at no extra cost.

Ofcom has published some of the first responses from UK broadband ISPs and internet content providers to their new review of Net Neutrality rules, which were designed to ensure no serious blocking or slowing of access to legal websites or other online services by ISPs and mobile operators. Suffice to say, vested interests split the pack.

Mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK have today become the first two network providers to reach a special deal, which will enable them to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the entire London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels). The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun to enforce a number of new consumer protection measures on mobile operators, which in practice means that they can no longer supply locked phones and are now limited to a maximum contract term of 24-months on bundles (mobile plans and handsets).

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a new set of H2 2021 results from their testing of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the UK cities of Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Manchester. Overall, EE tended to deliver the strongest availability and performance, but not for all cities.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has once again come top in umlaut‘s latest annual 2021 UK Mobile Network Test, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G service performance across 19 cities, 46 towns and along 10,000km of major roads. But Vodafone weren’t far behind.

The UK telecoms regulator has today set new annual licence fees (ALF) for spectrum licences in the 2100MHz band, which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks for the eye watering sum of £22.5bn. But mobile operators aren’t happy about the change.

The Government has unveiled a new agreement with the four primary mobile network operators, including Vodafone, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Three UK, which among other things will see existing 2G and 3G signals being “phased out” by 2033 (benefitting 4G / 5G services and mobile broadband) and a new target for OpenRAN adoption.

Customers of mobile operator Three UK can now access a new rewards app called “Three+” on Apple (iPhone etc.), Android and Huawei EMUI 11 based Smartphones, which they claim will give you exclusive offers and discounts from key brands and festivals, like Cineworld, Uber Eats, Frankie & Benny’s, the Telegraph and more.

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which saw TalkTalk come top of the naughty table for gripes about their fixed line home broadband and phone services. Meanwhile, Virgin Media took the most flak for Mobile and Pay TV, although overall complaints were down.
