Ofcom Shames UK ISP TalkTalk and Shell in Q3 2021 Complaints Study

Ofcom has today published their latest Q3 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which identified both TalkTalk and Shell Energy as the providers that attracted the most gripes for fixed broadband services, while TalkTalk also took flak for landline phone services and iD Mobile came top for Mobile moans.

Mobile Operator Three UK Gives Retail Staff a Huge Pay Rise

Mobile network operator Three UK has announced that around 2,500 of their retail staff – working in 311 retail stores – will be awarded pay increases of up to 12.6% this month, which will be reflected by new minimum hourly rates set at £10.13 nationwide and £11.40 in London, excluding bonus.

BT and BAI Deal to Support Mobile on London Underground

A new multi-million pound data centre deal has today been signed between BT and BAI Communications, which is designed to support last year’s (here) agreement with EE and Three UK to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels).

Vodafone UK Allegedly Expressed Interest in Three UK Merger

Mobile operator Vodafone UK is allegedly reported to have explored a move to merge with rival Three UK by acquiring them from parent CK Hutchison Holdings. But the expression of interest, which is said to have been made last year, did not lead to an agreement and is no longer part of active negotiations.

New customers of Three UK‘s 5G powered unlimited Home Broadband service, which claims to offer “average download speeds” of 100Mbps (this will vary.. a lot), can now take the service from just £21 per month for 24-months of service (dropping to £14 on their 4G package). Various other discount options also exist.

Vodafone UK and EE Delay Reintroduction of EU Roaming Charges

Mobile operators Vodafone and EE (BT) have moved to mildly delay the planned reintroduction of EU roaming charges, which will eventually see most customers being charged £2 per day to use their UK allowances (calls, texts and data / mobile broadband) across related countries. The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun to enforce a number of new consumer protection measures on mobile operators, which in practice means that they can no longer supply locked phones and are now limited to a maximum contract term of 24-months on bundles (mobile plans and handsets).

Overall, EE tended to deliver the strongest availability and performance, but not for all cities.

The UK telecoms regulator has today set new annual licence fees (ALF) for spectrum licences in the 2100MHz band, which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks for the eye watering sum of £22.5bn. Meanwhile, Virgin Media took the most flak for Mobile and Pay TV, although overall complaints were down.
